End of an Era

The very last commercial flight of Lufthansa’s iconic Airbus A340-600 took off from Washington Dulles (IAD) as Flight LH419 and is currently cruising across the Atlantic. In just a few hours, it will touch down in Frankfurt (FRA) for the final time, officially bringing down the curtain on its legendary 23 year career with the airline.

I was fortunate enough to spot a few of these long quad jets over the years when Lufthansa ferried them over to Manila (MNL/RPLL) for maintenance at Lufthansa Technik Philippines. A Huge thankyou to Lufthansa for giving us local spotters the chance to capture a couple of these jets right here at our home airport!

While the chapter on Lufthansa’s A340-600 has come to a close, the LH A340 fleet isn't completely gone just yet, their A340-300 fleet will continue flying key long haul routes for a bit longer before their eventual retirement.

[THROWBACK] A grainy photo taken onboard our Cebu Pacific flight to Cebu.

This photos captures early morning activity at Manila's Terminal 2 ramp as one of Philippine Airlines' ex-Iberia Airbus A340-300s finishes deplaning passengers and unloading cargo before being towed to another area of the airport (likely the Lufthansa Technik Philippines ramp).

Also visible in the background is one of PAL's GE powered A330 being serviced by ground handlers as it prepares for its next flight.

Nakakamiss! Looking back at these photos really makes me miss spotting PAL's legacy widebodies and wishing some of them were still flying for our flag carrier! But sadly, most of these jets have now been scrapped. 😞

Status: Stored in 2018, subsequently scrapped in 2020

An early morning spotting session yesterday gave me the opportunity to spot Philippine Airlines' very first Airbus A350-1000, seen here arriving under beautiful morning light on Manila's Runway 06 after an ultra long haul transpacific flight from New York (JFK).

[THROWBACK] One of Philippine Airlines' legacy Airbus A340-300s is seen here touching down on Manila's Runway 06.

Originally delivered to PAL under the French registration F-OHPL in 1997, it was later re-registered as RP-C3432 in 2008. Serving the airline for 17 years, it flew as PAL's versatile workhorse across its entire network spectrum, operating transpacific, regional, and high density domestic routes throughout its operational lifetime with the flag carrier.

Status: Retired and stored in 2014, subsequently scrapped in 2015.

Back in Philippine skies!

After seeing reports and Facebook posts that AirAsia Philippines' Airbus A320 (RP-C8978), sporting the special "Puregold" livery, was back in service after being grounded for a couple of years, I finally spotted it yesterday! Spotted here as it prepares for departure on Manila's Runway 06 bound for Caticlan. Awesome to see it back in the air flying again. 😁

Now it makes me wonder what ever happened to their other Puregold A320 (RP-C8975)? It’s been quite a while since its last flight.
