Bangkal, Evangelista is not just a haven for surplus car parts; it is not just place where we take our cars to be painted, welded and fixed – at a reasonable price- when things get messy. It is not just a place that we have to tread before we get to the beautiful side of Makati or Taft Avenue. Bangkal is a street food connoisseur’s dream!
Whether you enter Bangkal by turning right to Jollibee from EDSA or any of its junctions from the SLEX side, or from Taft Avenue, you are always sure to find a car wash, tire suppliers and other surplus parts store. But what we don’t mostly see is what Evangelista looks like when dusk is creeping in.
When the orange hues begin to deepen and the blues start to be eminent, most of the shops that weren’t visible during the day start to surface. The air starts to fill with this wonderful aroma that leads your hungry and weary soul to a place where it can find solace – and that kind of solace starts at P5.00!
If you walk far enough and muster the heat staring down at you, you’ll be able to find lots of vendors selling barbecues, isaw, tenga and other pinoy stuff that goes on a stick and tastes even better with vinegar. Just beside Purveyr Post is a small eatery that sells these scrumptious beauties. For as low as P5.00 you can binge on isaw, if you’re that type of person. Haha. But at P10.00, that’s where the fun begins. Their barbecue on a stick is up there on my list of top 5 barbecue on a stick list and the reason why is because is just that damn good! The sauce they use makes the meat juicy but the price is what makes these babies taste so good. Mostly, bbq on a stick is priced at P15.00 now but the guys here at Apolinario St. keeps it real.
Another one near Purveyr Post is the Yakitori sa Gedli (thank you for letting us shoot). They have really cool exteriors and it’s all very – how should I say it – aesthetic. Their counter is lined up with stickers and drawings that instantly makes you curious and boy was my curiosity satisfied. They serve LEGIT yakitori! Everything about it screams Japanese! From the preparation, the way they present it to their customers, their sauce, the seasoning, and the taste! Their MOMO – which is their chicken thigh – was the only one I got to try but just one bite convinced me that I should go back there again. Their affordable prices make it easier on the stomach too. Binge eating starts at P45.00 per 2 pcs.
Lastly, just before reaching Osmeña highway, in General Estrella street, you can find another hole-in-a-wall type of shop. I’m talking ahout the 100g Burgers and their sriracha of love. They sell – duh – and they’re all at very reasonable prices. Their Bacon Mushroom Melt is one of their cheapest products but it has one of the richest tastes, most especially when there’s sriracha on board. I like spicy food so that instantly makes everything 10x tastier! The burger goodness starts at P90.00
I would be trying more food from Bangkal soon, but I hope you can all visit this place and try out their food. You won’t regret it!
How bout you guys? Where’s your favorite place to eat?
Most of the photos were taken by Carla Victoria Tinio because I was busy eating everything hahaha! Video will be up soon!!
