The Macro Iloilo project is ecstatic to share the many flora and fauna taken in Leon. From creepy crawlies to majestic bugs and elegant flowers, we believe that life presents itself in many wondrous ways. Often, we overlook these tiny bits of life because of its size, but they have some of the biggest tasks in nature, and biodiversity as a whole.

Imagine, all these life found in the highlands of Leon alone. What more life can we find in other areas of Iloilo?

𝗔 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻: 𝗔 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆

Highlight: Bucari Pine Forest Campsite

After a journey, full of scenic views and snapshots of rural life, through the hills of Leon, we now come to one of its landmarks, The Bucari Campsite.

The campsite is considered one of the hearts of the Bucari ecotourism area, with a registered elevation of 773 MASL.

As you enter the area, a gush of Pine trees drown you in a green sea of natural marvel. This is attributed to multiple reforestation efforts aiming to support ecological balance. In fact, RA 10176 or the Arbor Day Act of 2012 is being observed by the locals with an annual tree-planting day.

All these conservation efforts have surely contributed to the booming flora and fauna of Leon. Stay tuned for our next post for an awe-inspiring set of biodiversity.

V & M is located in the highlands of Leon. They offer not only an amazing abundance of flowers but also a calming space where refreshments are offered.

The space offers multiple photo spots and fun structures that are instagrammable, filling color to your feed. As you step into the farm, you are met with colorful stairs in congruent to the different colors of the flowers. As you step up, you go through a journey of nature. As you reach the peak, overlooking and hanging nets are propped up for photo opportunities and an adventurous seat for rest.

Pine Brew Cafe is located at Sitio Hubag, Barangay Bacolod, Leon, along winding roads towards multiple campsites. A quick pit stop presents you with not only a beautiful view of Mount Camandag but also a factory reset of your lungs from a mere whiff of fresh air.

Pine Brew has multiple offerings of drinks and food, with coffee as their specialty. So imagine, not only do you have refreshing coffee but refreshing views of life and nature.

Tay Meo’s BBQ, also known as Romeo Native Chicken Eatery has been a cherished local enterprise that has stood the test of time since 1997. Tay Meo, or Romeo Cadiz started his gastronomic journey as a means to provide for his family. He started with serving Arroz Caldo that has clicked and appealed to local tastes. Seeing steady support for his flavors, he grabbed this opportunity to diversify his offerings through native chicken and 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘨. Today, the eatery retains its unique flavors using local ingredients; adding a wider choice of different viands, paired with the reciprocated love for locals, and equipped with world-class consistency.

From the heavy sacks lifted by determined porters to the meticulous arrangement of vegetables by our local vendors, every detail captures the dedication behind the food we eat.

Capturing these scenes is about more than just documentation; it is about honoring the rhythm of industry that defines Leon. These images represent the sweat, the community collaboration, and the deep-rooted pride of our local agriculturists.

Highlight: Leon Public Market

Leon is known as the Vegetable Basket of Iloilo highlighting the town’s rich agricultural prowess. Coming from a naturally gifted topography, a variety of produce is sourced from Leon and is exported to different parts of Panay.

Fun Fact! Iloilo has an 𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘢 or market day culture, where its different towns have scheduled surges of commerce and is a cultural phenomenon accepted by locals. These schedules have been kept to heart by Ilonggos as it is believed that during these scheduled days, the produce are served with utmost freshness and are sold with the best of deals. For Leon, the 𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘢 falls every Saturday, turning an already lively weekend to one filled with community and wellness.

Imagine, waking up to a well-rested weekend after a school-filled week. Your house is surrounded with the smell of coffee and the cacophony of sounds of OPM, construction, barking dogs, and your noisy electric fan that has passed its shelf life. Your parent enters the room, urging you to prepare for a quick market stroll. As you step off the tricycle that is lowered at about three inches of the ground making you marvel at the sheer resilience of Filipino engineering, you are immersed in the sights, smells, and sounds of the market day.

You see cabbage and lettuce with a healthy shade of green that mirrors the vast highlands of Leon.

You get a whiff of dried fish and 𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘴 that pierces your nostrils.

You feel the humid air and occasional heat that the vendors attempt to fend off so their produce won’t blacken.

Lastly, you see a town full of life and stories that are yet to be told.

In the end, what seems to be a normal occurrence through the unvarying waves of life holds many aspects of culture, tradition, and history.
