A Lesson I Didn’t Expect to Learn Behind the Camera
As a photographer, my role during events is to document every important moment. I usually focus on capturing the speakers, the audience, the reactions, and the details that complete the story of the event. Most of the time, I’m so focused on taking photos that I don’t really get the chance to listen closely to the speakers.
But this time was different.
I had the opportunity to photograph Ma'am Maria Cristina R. Panaligan, who was one of the speakers at a BATMC event dedicated to supporting and empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
While photographing her presentation, I found myself not only capturing the moments—I was also listening.
She spoke with confidence and sincerity. What stood out to me most was how openly she shared her knowledge and the processes behind her business. As an entrepreneur, she could have simply talked about her success, but instead, she chose to share what she knows in a way that could genuinely help others, especially the PWDs who attended the event.
I also noticed how engaged the audience was. With every slide she presented, the listeners were attentive and interested. Her words felt natural and sincere. She wasn’t simply reading from a presentation—she was speaking from experience and sharing what she truly believed could help.
As a photographer, I came there to document an event. But unexpectedly, I also became a listener.
It reminded me that even when we’re simply behind the camera, there are still lessons waiting to be learned from the people we meet.
When I had the chance to speak with Ma'am Maria Cristina personally, she told me something that stayed with me:
“Charity itong ginagawa ko. Maikli lang ang buhay, L.A. Tumulong na tayo hangga’t kaya.” - MCRP Olivents Maria Cristina Rebong Panaligan
Thank you, Ma'am Maria Cristina, for reminding me that our knowledge becomes even more meaningful when we use it to help others.
Sometimes, the best moments I capture aren’t just the ones inside my camera—they are the lessons I take with me after the event.
