Southern Highlanders in Papua New Guinea wear these colorful beadwork ribbons and adornments as part of bilas (body adornment), which represent identity, status, and cultural pride. They are deeply tied to ancestral traditions, spiritual beliefs, and social ceremonies, symbolizing connection to land, clan, and heritage.

Yesterday marked a significant moment for our community as leaders Paul Baraka and Joe Pranke reconciled, sealing their unity with a handshake 🀝 that symbolized the end of division and the beginning of partnership, with the community now recognized as one team rather than β€œTeam 1” or β€œTeam 2.” The occasion was highlighted by speeches from all our community leaders, with MC Sigoi Bill delivering an outstanding performance that captured the spirit of the event, and I ensured the safe drop-off of all our Konedobu people who attended the reconciliation at Tokarara, Joe’s residence. Importantly, this reconciliation has opened the door for all community members to meet and greet both leaders, who are now working together in partnership to strengthen unity and cooperation across our community.

That's Good News to the People of East Sepik.

East Sepik Province have successfully exported 240 bags of high-quality dried cocoa beans weighing 15 metric tonnes to New Caledonia.

Based on current market indications, cocoa is around USD 6,052 (PGK 25,830) per metric tonne, so expected payment for this shipment is over USD 90,000 (PGK 387,000), according to EU-Streit PNG Programme.

The cooperatives involved in this export were Numbo Cooperative, Yekere Cocoa Cooperative, Juar Cooperative and Ramangs Cooperative.

As per a signed export agreement for the first shipment, the overseas buyer has transacted 90 percent of the payment to the farmers following the arrival of the consignment at the destination seaport. The remaining 10 percent will be paid upon receipt of the container at the buyer’s factory.

This first shipment of high-quality dried cocoa beans from Sepik to New Caledonia marks a real shift for rural cocoa farming households in East Sepik Province, moving beyond local sales and into specialty trade where quality standards and export readiness unlock access and better returns.
