Another exciting young talent from the PNG National Youth Competition NYC Mt Hagen Eagles program, Michael John, has been named as the 18th Man for the Wamp Nga Mt Hagen Eagles side ahead of their Round 10 clash against the Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers.

Michael's selection is a testament to his hard work, commitment, and consistent performances throughout the season. It also highlights the club's continued focus on developing and promoting local young players through the Eagles pathway system.

The Eagles will take on the Vipers this Saturday, 13th June 2026, at the Jonah Ambane Rugby League Oval in Minj in what is expected to be a thrilling Round 10 encounter.

🏉GUMINE RFL LAUNCHED ITS 2026 INAGURAL SEASON 🏉

Gumine Station came alive on 7th June 2026 as huge crowds packed the Gumine RFL Ground to witness the official launching of the Gumine Rugby Football League (GRFL).

The launching program was exceptionally well organized by the league chairman, Mr. James Wai, a prominent leader in Gumine district, together with his hardworking executive members. Their dedication and commitment ensured a successful and memorable occasion for the people of Gumine.

The event was officially launched by the Chairman of the Simbu Provincial Rugby League Development (SPRLD) Board, Rev. John Kamane, in the presence of other SPRLD board members who attended to witness this important milestone.

Also present was Mr. Anton Kuman, Chairman of the Simbu Provincial Health Authority, who encouraged young people to actively participate in sports and church activities while discouraging all forms of violence and social issues affecting communities.

Representing the office of the PNGRFL was Mr. Nuabe Kuipa, Lower Highlands Confederate Director, accompanied by Game Development Officer Mr. John Waninara. During the ceremony, Mr. Kuipa officially declared Gumine RFL as one of the sanctioned leagues under PNGRFL.

The reception from the community was outstanding, reflecting the people's passion and support for rugby league development in Gumine.

Congratulations 🎉 to Gumine RFL, President James Wai, and the entire executive team on the successful launching of the league. May this initiative continue to empower youths, promote unity, and develop future rugby league stars in Simbu Province.

I am more than happy to present this rugby ball to Border Mates Rugby Club of Kumbal, the newest team to join the Kerowagi Rugby Football League (KRFL) and participate in the 2026 season.

🏉LETS GIVE YOUNG TALENTS MORE CHANCE TO SHINE🏉

The impact of the NRL Bid Academy (NRLBID) Program is becoming more evident every week in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup competition. Players who have graduated through the program are performing exceptionally well, displaying outstanding discipline, professionalism, and a high standard of football on the field.

A big thank you to Joe Grima and the NRLBID Academy Program for laying the foundation and developing the future stars of Papua New Guinea rugby league. Your investment in youth development is producing results.

Pictured are Ames John and Joseph Martin of Mt. Hagen NYC, arguably one of the youngest second-row pairings in the competition and among the most consistent performers for the Morobe Kandes this season. Their growth and performances are a testament to the quality of development pathways available to young players.

Credit also goes to Stanley Tepend and the Morobe Kandes coaching staff for believing in and nurturing these young guns, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents at the highest domestic level.

This should serve as a reminder to all franchise clubs across the country: recruit and develop talent from the NYC ranks and invest in our youth. The future of PNG rugby league lies in identifying, mentoring, and building young players rather than relying heavily on recycled players.
