Seven policemen and one policewoman from Hohola Police Station were summoned by Police Commissioner David Manning today after being caught chewing betelnut and smoking in public while in full uniform.
The officers were seen outside their station around midday when Commissioner Manning happened to pass by the area and observed the misconduct.
Visibly displeased, Manning instructed the Hohola Police Station Commander to have the offending officers march on foot from Hohola to the Police Headquarters at Konedobu as a disciplinary measure.
The incident forms part of Commissioner Manningโs ongoing crackdown on unprofessional and unruly behaviour within the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary [RPNGC].
NBC News understands that the officers are yet to be formally charged, and efforts are being made to confirm what disciplinary actions or penalties will follow.
Commissioner Manning has consistently emphasized the need for discipline, professionalism, and public trust in the police force, warning that officers who tarnish the forceโs image will be held accountable.
