Peace agreements have failed in many countries around the world. Two of the worst outbreaks of massive violence in the 1990s—Angola in 1993 and Rwanda in 1994—followed the failure of peace agreements to end those wars.

When the Bougainville Peace Agreement was signed in 2001, most people thought we would fail to uphold it along the way.

But today, 23 years after the Bougainville Peace Agreement, we have shown the world that Bougainville is fully capable of becoming an independent nation. Independence is an inevitable dream for Bougainvilleans. From children to elders, we all share the same vision.

This is the true spirit and mentality of Bougainvilleans. If you haven't visited Bougainville to see the historical sites and learn about what we have gone through, we invite you to visit us and discover it for yourself

Bougainville's Unique Tradition of Honoring Loved Ones: Singing Kaur

In the picturesque region of Bougainville, particularly in Kieta Are, customs and traditions are an integral part of daily life. These traditions, passed down through generations, reflect the rich cultural heritage of the people of Bougainville. One such fascinating tradition is the practice of celebrating the lives of departed loved ones through a unique event known as "Tampa' Oo or Pinisim Sore Kaikai (Singing Kaur)."

When a beloved family member passes away in Bougainville, it is not the end of their story. Instead, it marks the beginning of a process that involves preserving the memory of the departed individual in a remarkable way. The family members come together to cherish their loved one's legacy by preserving their belongings for a specific period, often spanning several years.

During this time, family members gather the personal belongings of the deceased, such as clothing, jewelry, and other cherished items. These items are carefully stored and safeguarded, waiting for the day when the "Singing Kaur" ceremony will take place.

The "Singing Kaur" ceremony is a grand event that involves a heartfelt and joyous celebration of the departed loved one's life. It typically takes place after several years, allowing the family ample time to prepare and collect stories and memories of the deceased. The ceremony is marked by a massive feast, where family and friends gather to honor the memory of the departed.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Singing Kaur ceremony is the symbolic act of burning the deceased's belongings. Early in the morning following the grand feast, the family members and participants gather around a ceremonial fire. The carefully preserved belongings are then set ablaze as a profound and symbolic gesture.

This act of burning the belongings is not meant as a disposal but rather as a symbol of the family's willingness to let go of the physical possessions of their loved one. It signifies the transition from mourning to celebration, acknowledging that the spirit of the departed has found peace and that their memory will live on in the hearts and stories of the community.

As the belongings turn to ashes, the participants of the ceremony engage in traditional songs and dances known as "singsing kaur." These songs are a vital part of the event, as they not only pay tribute to the deceased but also bring the community together in a spirit of unity and remembrance.

The Singing Kaur tradition in Bougainville exemplifies the unique and deeply rooted customs and traditions that define this region. It serves as a beautiful testament to the importance of celebrating the lives of those who have passed away and preserving their memory in a way that is both meaningful and culturally significant. In a world that often rushes past, Bougainville's Singing Kaur reminds us of the power of tradition and the enduring connection between the living and the departed.
