My photographic pursuits began nearly 30 years ago. As a kid I used an old Pentax SLR, which at the height of my passion was promptly stolen! When I returned to the craft I I replaced my old Pentax with Nikon, and never looked back! I'm passionate about all sorts of photography. Capturing vignettes of life, either candidly or on a scheduled shoot, is what thrills me! Whether it be travel photography immersing myself in a new culture, shooting events, landscapes or people, I always try to show the reality of what your eyes see. While I have nothing against flash photography (and frequently use it), I try to use as much natural light as possible.

Zanzibari culture is heavily reliant on the ocean and fundamental to everything from its economy, history, and cuisine, to the local way of life. The smaller local boats are known as "Ngalawas;" a type of traditional wooden fishing boat, similar to a catamaran, with two outriggers. When the tide races out, more than a few can be seen dotting the wet sand, baking in the sun as locals and tourists explore tidal pools and look for uncovered treasures!

One of the best lunch-break views I've ever had! This is Yosemite National Park with Indian Ridge, North Dome, Half Dome to the left, Glacier Point to the right, with Yosemite Falls kind of behind me to the right. Simply breath-taking!

Playing with light is one of the things I love most about photography--the ability to manipulate points of light to create a scene you otherwise might not be able to observe: star trails, stages of an eclipse, fantasy blurs of textures or actions (like below). This photo was a camp being set up using predominantly red-light headlamps. This is respectful to camp neighbors who are probably transfixed on the starry heavens above! After a somewhat sleepless night (silly dreams of a bear rooming with me in the tent) in the back country of Yosemite National Park, this guy was who showed up instead! Absolutely both stunning and surreal to watch the surrounding wildlife!

Today is 🇺🇲 VETERANS DAY and I'd like to offer a heartfelt THANK YOU to the veterans who have gone before us, protecting our country, our freedoms, and our way of life. Whether with their lives, or with their time, I owe them a debt of gratitude that can scarcely be repaid. Thank you for your service!

Amazing new development in drones! Variable propeller position let's this hybrid fly in air and water!

A 3D-printed hybrid drone can quickly transition between air and water thanks to variable pitch propellers. Watch a video of the drone in action.

Happy Independence Day! Hope everyone had a fun time yesterday and enjoyed some fireworks! Here are a few shots from last night of the Camden, Maine fireworks as seen from the summit of . The panoramic is a composite of a few different shots and is what I saw in my mind as I was hiking up the last half mile to the summit! This shoot was an experiment in hand-held photography for a circumstance that usually demands a tripod. I didn't bring one on this trip and found out by chance that Camden Hills State Park above Town of Camden, Maine, was reopening the road to the top at to allow people to watch the fireworks from the top.

If you find yourself in that situation the best way to still get in-focus photos (as much as possible) is to
1. SHOOT IN RAW.
2. Raise your ISO as high as possible to the point background noise would be an issue
3. Get that shutter speed to 1/60 or higher--the images will be dark, but you should be able to regain the exposure in a RAW editor
4. Put your shutter on continuous high shooting
5. Whenever you shoot, let it fire off around 5 photos--the ones in the MIDDLE *should* be pretty-well focused.

That should be a decent band aid to get out of your non-tripod jam. Then next time bring a tripod!

Throwback to one of the best times I've ever had--sliding (glissading) down Mt. Saint Helens from above the clouds! Something about simply sitting down and letting gravity take control was wild. To get back down the glacier we did about 9 or 10 of these slides, with one being nearly disastrous as we all had to "self-arrest" with our ice axes due to me coming in so fast and knocking the others over a cliff.
