In my pocket, a bead of resin polished between my fingers, perfumed by a scent that will never cease to move me. I return home with a heart soothed, nourished, and yet already nostalgic. I carry with me that light, those faces, and one simple certainty: I will come back.

I experienced this journey with rare intensity. I loved laying my hand on the warm, delicate, living bark. Using the manghaf, that millennia-old tool still used today. Walking in the footsteps of those who, for centuries, have watched over these trees. Then sitting cross-legged in the shade of a centuries-old tree, beside these men who know them better than anyone. Sharing a cup of coffee, a few sweet dates. Listening to their voices blend with the breath of the wind.

Even today, he and his brother still harvest the resin, as their father and grandfather did before them. And that is the true beauty of Amouage’s project: weaving together international expertise, Omani craftsmanship and the living memory of local communities, to protect and nurture Wadi Dawkah, guided by a simple ethic, one of respect for both trees and people.

This morning, as we walked among the trees, Ahmed shared stories of his childhood here. He grew up in this wadi. He slept in caves hollowed straight into the rock, climbed the trees, and ran after the young goats across the burning sands.

Boswellia sacra is a survivor; it adapts and can be transplanted. Each tree now carries a tag recording its vital data. A “smart forest” in this ancient desert, a poetic paradox. And so, as you step closer, you notice the playful smile of a QR code hanging from a trunk or branch, a wink to our era. Yet beneath the bark, nothing has changed. The resin is still harvested as it always was. The same gestures, the same patience, and the same miracle.

I had the chance to meet Ahmed, Ghanem and Mohammed, all three Omani. They work here passionately. What drives them? The protection of the trees, nothing matters more. A 3,500 acres estate that shelters more than 4,000 trees, with new saplings planted regularly.

Little has changed here. The same mineral landscape, the same colour of sky, and that line of mountains on the horizon, sketched as if in charcoal. The light that sets the stones ablaze, the golden dust, and the gnarled silhouette of the Boswellia sacra, standing as though they have always been here. Motionless, steadfast, unforgettable.
