I’ve been looking through books about Van Gogh’s approach to portraiture-he did dozens.
He said portraiture was the only thing that moved him . In 1888 he wrote “I’d like to paint portraits which would appear like apparitions to people in a hundred years time . He didn’t care about making people look “accurate “ in a photographic sense. He said he wanted to paint men and women with that something of the eternal which the halo used to symbolise .

But we still treat faces as if they’re transparent windows into the mind .
