Werner Kaffl - Maker and Photographer

Werner Kaffl - Maker and Photographer Photographer and Maker At the moment I'm mainly doing physical things, like making props.

I don't do much photography right now, partly because I do not want my work to be used to train AI's. Those are exploiting the hard work of real artists for personal gain, without credits or any compensation whatsoever.

This was taken in Island Bay in 2020 I guess it's sort of similar to the current swells. I was younger then, now I'm reluctant to climb around on those rocks in weather like this.
Stay safe everyone :-)

Finally all done and functional, benchtop PSU for my electronics work, and all looking Aliens - Fallout - Borderlands style. Made from 2nd hand PSU, 3d printed parts and some bits and bobs from local and online shops.
The pics show a bit of my pre- and actual weathering process, like making "rust" from actual rust, adding rust texture and colors to the plastic parts before painting, covering and painting those bits, then removing the covers and properly weather it all in one piece.
Fun project-turned-useful, and I have just the thing going where this one is needed 😁

Ok, now some decent electrical wiring and a tiny bit of electronics work. The electronics for the regulator and screen are built into one device, which one can buy as is, no credits there for me. But all the rest is my own work.
It still needs a frame cage around it (which still needs painting), but it's now fully functional:
3.3V and 5V fixed, up to 24A each, one 12V fixed, up to 18A, one USB port (fast charge capability), and the ports under the screen provide 0-30V with up to 6A. The voltage and current for these ports can be regulated in increments of down to 0.01V and 0.01A.
All in all, if I didn't go fancy with paint and other visual bits, this would be around $100 plus labor. If bought "new" in a shop, such a device can easily exceed $500.
The heart of it is, like mentioned in earlier posts, a second hand computer power supply (ATX), something around 200W would easily do the job - mine is 600W, which is pretty over the top, but it's what I could get my hands on easily.

So, I had some time and ok-ish weather for painting my DIY benchtop power supply - and of course weathering, still my favorite.
First image shows the 3d parts I made, to house all the other components, the rest is basically BTS of my usual "grime-and-rust-paitchipping-process"
All the bits I needed have also arrived, so I can start putting this all together soon...
Great, when it's finished, I can do my electronics work much easier, with finer settings and some more juice behind it 😁

Ok, some news on my benchtop power supply. Being an electrician by trade and having worked as a systems engineer for close to decades, I should have known better. But impatience got the better of me and I worked on the initial one with power still attached - which toasted the thing 😁
So, new second hand PC PSU and back to cleaning up and reducing wires to something manageable. This time all went well.
And, of course there needs to be lights as well, it's me after all 🤣
Last image shows the thing partly assembled, the frame still needs to be painted, then there will be the front with all the business ends.

A new project, sideshow to one I won't talk about yet 😁
Not a prop or so, but something I NEED to make things!
I was a bit fed up with my benchtop power supply, button rachet jumping numbers (and yes, the one I used does that by weird design).
So I researched a bit and found someone making a perfectly good Benchtop DC power supply from an old PC unit.
Well, $20 for a second hand ATX PSU from sustainability trust was my first step, ordering some $50 of supplies online (and waiting) was the second.
Atm I'm cleaning the PSU, clipping and sorting wires and doing some testing...

Here a link to one of the guys posting such a build on YouTube - but please, this device will be connected to mains, don't try this if you don't know what you're doing...

Browsing through my archives, I found this one, taken at my favorite rock in Island Bay last year.
I didn't work through the whole series yet, maybe there will be more later on ;-)

May the 4th be with you 💫I know I'm late in NZ, but just right in other time zones 😁

I made a thing - Part 2

The "thing" is now properly encased in its housing, with all its electronig "brain stuff".
The straight light strips left and right will, at a later time, be only flashing like a camera flash, when the whole thing is mounted inside the lid of its case.
The red frame it sits on is the mounting bracket.
The sign under the eye, btw, is simplified Japanese for "sentinel" (as far as I know), NOT "41"

Soundfile is from YouTube's free sound library, so don't bother with copyright claims!
