Tawera Photography - Victoria Caseley With rural roots, in the UK and New Zealand, it is not surprizing that I have a passion for nature, wildlife, farming, equestrian and pet photography

I've been lucky enough to go to Kenya on safari a couple of times. Wildlife photography involves a lot of luck. Certain sightings are just that, being in the right place, at the right time. I know how lucky I was to see this. Even those who spend years out in the bush may never get to see a lioness carrying one of her cubs.

Thanks to Andy Rouse Photography for ensuring our vehicle was in the right position. So special and we only had one other vehicle at the sighting.

This is probably one of the youngest elephants I've ever seen, you can still see the soft hair. Mind you this particular shot makes me also think of a mouse given the position of the ears.

Earlier this year I was able to visit OI Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Here are a few photos that I have developed so far - Lion, Black Rhino and Plains Zebra.

The black rhino (Diceros bicornis) is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There are three subspecies of the black rhino, the eastern, the southern, and the southwestern. OI Petja have been a stalwart in the recovery efforts of Black Rhinos and I was thrilled to see this black rhino calf (eastern subspecies) with its shy mum.

According to IUCN, the black rhino population declined by a staggering 97.6% from 1960 to the 1990s, primarily as a result of poaching. In 1993, there were estimated to be just 2,300 black rhinos living in the wild, however thanks to conservation efforts across Kenya and southern Africa, populations have risen to over 6,000. This is still only about one third of the white rhino population.

Mutual grooming is an important horse behavior related to relationships within a herd. It reaffirms the bond and relationship between horses. It is expressed by the lateral parallel body position of two horses that allows for nibbling along the back or withers of each horse.

A cold, damp end to 2024 here. At least it has given me an opportunity to reflect on my favourite photo of 2024.

Ever since I watched the TV series Grizzly Adams in the late 1970’s as a young girl (showing my age now) I have wanted to see Grizzly Bears in the wild. In July this year I finally had my opportunity spending 8 days with Grizzly Bears in Lake Clarke and Katmai National Parks in Alaska. What an amazing experience I had, so many different encounters it was difficult to choose just one. Why this one? It shows what I had in my imagination over the years – coming across a Grizzly Bear at the end of the day in the mountains. I so enjoy the quiet and peace of the countryside and wildlife encounters. Nature at its most calming.

Happy New Year and all the best for the adventures that await you all in 2025.

Honoured and very privileged to be able to return into the Kaimanawa Ranges to photograph New Zealand's Kaimanawa Wild Horses. No opportunity for evening backlit photographs this year but there was just enough light for this one the following morning. Many thanks to the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses for arranging the trip and the NZ Defence Force and Department of Conservation for access.
