Lighting Up the Start of 2026 ✨🎇(Which photo is your favourite?)

That’s all for now, folks! My 2025/2026 Festival of Lights photo series comes to a close with this final post. This set features a mix of general shots capturing the installations, environment, and people, alongside more experimental long exposures and LED stick experiments.

I genuinely think this year has been one of the best FOL yet, especially with such a strong variety of incredible installations spread throughout Pukekura Park. A huge thank you to all the artists, volunteer crew, TSB (tag), and the many others who make this event happen each year. It truly is one of the hallmarks of what makes New Plymouth so special, on top of the natural beauty I’m always out photographing anyway.

As always, let me know which photo is your favourite in the comments! I’ll now return to your regularly scheduled travel posts. Thanks for following along, and stay tuned ✨📸

Eye of the Forest 👁️✨ (Comment which photo is your favourite! 1-16?)

Today’s post continues my experimental Festival of Lights photo series, following on from The Hive installation. This set focuses on Eye of the Forest by Catherine Ellis &

The installation was a mesmerising audiovisual experience, combining dynamic light projections, an imposing eye structure, and deep, immersive sound to create a dramatic atmosphere. Building on my interest in abstract, long-exposure photography, I experimented with using the installation’s structure and light to form dynamic patterns and shapes throughout these images.

Pick your favourite shot and let me know in the comments!

The next post will be the final instalment of the FOL series, so stay tuned 👀✨

Into The Hive 🐝✨ (Comment on which photo is your favourite! 1-9?)

While the incredible Festival of Lights (FOL) may have wrapped up for 2025/2026, my highlight photo spree is only just getting started! Today I’m sharing my wild, experimental shots of Beamhacker’s The Hive installation.

Going into FOL with a bit of experience under my belt (being a local), I knew I wanted to push myself with more long-exposure and abstract photography. Pukekura Park, and the installations themselves, were perfect for this, and it also helped work around my camera’s not-so-great performance in low light. When I came across The Hive, I immediately saw the perfect opportunity to experiment with long exposures and in-camera zooms to stretch and exaggerate the Geometric hexagon forms.

I started with one-second exposures, but quickly realised they were too short to really elongate the shapes. After some trial and error, I found the sweet spot at around 2.5 seconds, paired with very controlled zooming, especially tricky since I didn’t have my tripod with me. The final results gave off these futuristic, techno vibes, with each variation creating its own unique effect.

Let me know which numbered photo is your favourite, comment or flick me a message!

After spending a good 30 minutes (probably longer, lol) capturing The Hive, we moved on to the next standout installation…which I’ll be sharing in my next post. Stay tuned, and take a guess which one it is 😉
