❄️ Nearly 1,000 photos.
⏱️ 10 hours of shooting.
πŸŒ™ One freezing night on Mt Taranaki.

A few weeks ago I set up my camera beside this communications tower and let it run from 8pm until 6am beneath a sky full of stars. ⭐

This image is just a single 10-minute exposure from that night.

The real challenge is still underway. I'm currently processing a 10-hour star trail image created from almost 1,000 photographs, along with not one but 2 all-night timelapses captured during the session. πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯

If everything comes together, you'll soon be able to watch the entire southern sky slowly rotating around the South Celestial Pole while the tower stands beneath it. πŸŒ€βœ¨

For now, here's a small preview of what I witnessed from one of New Zealand's most spectacular vantage points. πŸ”οΈπŸŒŒ

πŸ₯Ά Two hours of hiking. ❄️ Freezing temperatures. πŸŒ™ A bright Moon lighting up the mountain.

Not exactly ideal conditions for astrophotography... but some nights are worth the effort.

Three weeks ago I spent a night high on Mt Taranaki capturing star trails and timelapses beneath a 61% illuminated Moon. I'm finally getting close to processing those, but before diving into them I came across this single frame and decided it deserved an edit of its own.

The moonlight revealed incredible detail across the mountain's rugged upper slopes while still allowing thousands of stars to shine through. βπŸ”οΈ

The bright star on the left is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

Sometimes it's easy to get so focused on the timelapse or star trails image that a single frame gets overlooked. In this case, I'm glad I took a second look. 😊

Back in April, I left my Insta360 X5 standing in the middle of Stony River overnight to capture an all-night timelapse beneath the stars. πŸŒŒπŸ“·πŸŒŠ

I've finally put together a behind-the-scenes video showing how it all came together, including the setup, overnight conditions, a surprise rabbit visitor 🐰, and the final timelapse featuring the Milky Way, strong green and red airglow, and sunrise over Mt Taranaki - and a few other big surprises!

If you'd like to see what went into capturing the footage, you can watch the full video on YouTube.

It took me 6 years to reach 7,000 followers...

About 3 weeks to reach 8,000...

And just 6 weeks to reach 9,000 🀯

Thank you πŸ™

Whether you've followed recently, shared a post, purchased a print or calendar, left an encouraging comment, or simply enjoyed the photos and videos, I genuinely appreciate the support.

One of the biggest surprises has been seeing so many people connect with the timelapses πŸŽ₯ and behind-the-scenes stories. Some of those videos have reached well over 100,000 views and brought hundreds of new followers along for the journey.

If you're new here, welcome πŸ‘‹

I'm Brendan, based in Taranaki, New Zealand, sharing real landscapes πŸ”οΈ, real night skies ✨, and the stories behind them.

Last year I spent part of the year in a moon boot πŸ₯Ύ with a foot injury. Being able to get back out hiking πŸ₯Ύ, exploring, and photographing these incredible places again has meant more to me than I can easily put into words.

Most of this happens around a regular day job, which means plenty of late nights πŸŒ™, early mornings πŸŒ…, and the occasional adventure that doesn't quite go to plan πŸ˜….

Thank you for being part of the journey ❀️

🌌 Murphy's Law for New Zealand Aurora Photographers
Three weeks of crystal-clear skies.
No aurora.
One KP7 forecast.
Heavy rain warnings, orange alerts, and cloud from one end of the country to the other. 🀣
Anyone else feeling this?

🌌 Would it still be here in the morning?
I left a camera in the middle of this river overnight and hoped the river didn't rise... or that nobody decided to take it.
The plan was simple: capture an all-night timelapse of the Milky Way as it tracked across the sky.
πŸͺ¨ I weighted the tripod down with rocks, grabbed a few hours of sleep in my car, and returned before dawn to see what the camera had captured.
πŸŒ™ Once the Moon set around midnight, the sky came alive. The Milky Way put on an incredible display, but that wasn't the only thing the camera recorded.
πŸ‘€ There were a few surprises during the night too...
✨ This 37-second timelapse compresses an entire night into just a few moments.
❓Did you spot anything unusual?
