Most people come to me with a vague sense that they need "better photos for their website." Some have seen a competitor's headshot and thought theirs looks dated by comparison. Others have been putting it off for two years and finally decided to do something about it.

What they're usually describing, without necessarily using the term, is personal branding photography, and there's a fair bit of confusion about what that actually means, what it costs, and what you end up with. So here's a straightforward answer.

This was a half-day shoot where we captured a range of imagery to update website and marketing collateral. Images captured included, high tea, dinner, staff profiles, spa facilities and pool-side RnR.

Always searching for angles others overlook. It’s easy to stand front and centre and shoot the obvious frame. Safe. Clean. Predictable.

But the stronger images are usually a step to the left. Or lower. Or shot through the crowd instead of over it.

Move your feet. Use the foreground. Embrace the obstruction.

That’s where the story lives!

Late last year, I spent a day on the road around Hawke’s Bay with Spencer from All Trades, visiting manufacturing and construction businesses to photograph their Filipino team members in action.

This is the kind of work I really enjoy. Being on site, working alongside people who are proud of what they do, and capturing real moments as they happen.

For this shoot, I worked entirely with the existing ambient light. It kept everything natural and meant we could move quickly without disrupting the workday.

Huge thanks to Spencer and the team at All Trades, and to the businesses who welcomed us on site.
