I had a wonderful but slightly concerning interaction with this handsome young kea. I met him at the Otira Viaduct Lookout, where he was near the railings playing with some plastic rubbish. Very quickly after seeing this, I tried to think of how to get it off of him, but I know this curious young bird won't give it up for no reason. I looked around the area and saw a stick, tried my luck for a swap, and he quickly dropped the plastic for the more natural toy, though he did consider wanting the plastic back as soon as I took it. After this, I found a bag I could put that and all the other rubbish I could find in the area into while defending it from the interest of the nearby kea.

While I'm glad I could help, I'm sad that I had to. We should be doing better than littering, especially where birds like kea will interact with it and potentially harm themselves.

This beautiful tui was one of at least 20 in and around this stunning kowhai tree that was in full bloom. I adore the contrast between the bright yellow of the kowhai and the soft blue-green that you can see on the chest of this tui. When I was admiring everything that was happening in the tree, it was so hard to decide where to point my camera! It felt like there was something interesting happening in every section, from little arguments to the frequency of tui hanging upside down to feed more easily on the flowers. I'm happy captured this moment, where this gorgeous bird looks posed so elegantly and calmly.

I think it's time I share this adorable photo and the experience I had photographing this cute young kea.
This was taken at the viaduct lookout car park near Arthur's Pass in winter, where this adorable friend was moving small rocks and checking what was underneath. At first I photographed from a distance so I could find out how comfortable it was with me being there, which (luckily for me) turned out to be very happy with my company. I crouched down a couple of meters away and started turning rocks which seemed to be more interesting to the kea than doing it itself. After some time of me turning a small rock, the kea checking it then me putting it back, the young friend got bored and walked over to the snow where it turned around and I got this photo. I love being able to interact with these gorgeous creatures and have memories like these.

This striking looking coot was just outside of Twizel when I saw it. I often find these feathered friends hard to photograph because of their behaviour and contrasted beak, but this friend was irresistible! I got to watch as it had a little preen and shake, which always melts my heart when I get to witness it. I love the colour of the water, and how it contrasts to the bright red of the coot's eye.

I like this angle and lighting as it makes the bird look like a work of art in itself, which is a bit different to my usual style.

Hey everyone! As some of you know, I sell products printed with my photography.
Right now I'm working hard on expanding my range with new types of products, as well as a huge expansion to my range of designs and photo pairings that I'm super excited to bring to life.

Please leave a comment or message me to let me know what products you'd like to see me sell in the future. It could be something you'd specifically like to see my work on, or maybe a product you've wanted to buy but you haven't found the one you want to put your money into yet.

While I'm not sure I'm finished perfecting this photo, I felt the need to share it. This beautiful Kotuku/white heron was in Okarito on the west coast of New Zealand. This is the resident bird who lives here all year round, unlike others who make it to the area from all across the country to breed every year. It felt like such a gift being able to watch this beautiful creature as it stalked through the water finding his food, and I felt so lucky to have captured this photo as they are very quick as they catch and eat their food.

This adorable creature is a southern brown tree frog, also known as the whistling tree frog. These small creatures were introduced to New Zealand in 1875 and are well-established throughout most of the country. They get up to 5cm long and are super sweet to listen to once they mature. Here, I photographed this tiny friend sitting on some wood where it was perching. I adore it's dark markings and vibrant eye leading to its adorable nose at the end of the focus. I love the texture in it's skin, and the soft green of the moss in the background.

I took this calming forest photo on a walk around Lake Rotaroa. This stunning location is filled with a huge range of textures, from mosses and leaf litter covering the forest floor, to the tree trunks and canopy leaves that filter out much of the sunlight. It felt like every turn let you discover a new piece of New Zealand's beautiful endemic flora. This walk also had plenty of stunning fungi when I went, including brackets high on broken trees, and small stems amongst the carpets of moss. A number of times during my walk, I heard distant parrot calls, though I'm not sure if it was kea or kaka, it made me smile and gave me a feeling of being at home.

This elegant pose is from a bellbird. They have a beautiful song, as their name would suggest. If you can't hear them singing, you'll likely hear the beating of their wings which are incredibly loud considering the size of the bird. Most days I have a bellbird in my garden and it always makes me smile hearing their call, especially when I get to hear their distant mate responding to them.
Often these birds blend in well with their surroundings, so I feel very lucky to have captured this beautiful friend in this light and angle within the tree to be able to appreciate the colour properly while the bird is still in it's natural environment.

This gentle friend is the New Zealand praying mantis. I photographed this friend on the port hills, where my partner found it moving along this bush. Our praying mantis is well known for being far more peaceful than the typical praying mantis species, and is far less likely to eat the male after reproducing.
I have such a soft spot for these beautiful mantids, and I adore the blue speck on the inside of their upper limbs which sadly isn't on display in this photo, but I love the pose from it looking back at me.

This is in my opinion, one of New Zealand's most beautiful birds, the tui. These metallic blue-green birds sing some of the most beautiful songs, while being able to mimic other sounds including other birds or something less natural!
This stunning tui was in Zealandia when I photographed it, along one of the paths. It was feeding on the flax flowers, which you can see from the large amount of pollen on its face from putting it's beak into the deep flowers. I love watching their poi feathers, the two white pieces on the front of the throat, as they sing.

This image received bronze in the NZIPP iris awards student category in 2023.

An iconic walk on the west coast, this is part of the Hokitika gorge walk. While it's known for the stunning blue water, I love the variety of beautiful trees, ferns, mosses and vines that covers almost every part of this area. When you walk through here, you are guaranteed to meet some very friendly fantails who adore the sandflies which, if you're not prepared, will bite you constantly. This piece of the path has beautiful curves and an open view of the forest which is easy to admire for hours, especially when you listen to the birds and the sound of leaves moving in the wind.
