Roy's photo of the week.

I enjoy natural features. This is Wave Rock, in Western Australia. It has eroded from a natural cliff. To get there from Perth is a long day - about 700 km return. One of my grandsons is exploring.

Made a quick trip to Oamaru this week. My companion, Ken Henderson, was keen to detour through Waimate where he once lived. Spotted the silo murals. One features Margaret Cruikshank, NZ's first woman to become a registered doctor, with WW1 hero Eric Bachelor. Another features former NZ Prime minister Norman Kirk, a one-time Waimate lad. Local artist, Bill Scott, presents his work brilliantly in sepia.

Image in the sky

I enjoyed this shifting cloud sculpture. It quietly changed as the North-east breeze drifted over the Port Hills of Christchurch. Surely this is Falkor the Luck Dragon in the 1984 movie `Neverending story.' The movie was based on the book of the same name by German author , Michael Ende.

Roy's Photo of the week.

It is not too difficult to fall in love with outdoors New Zealand. The outdoors invites many activities, amongst them tramping and mountaineering. But how about a spin on a horse along a quiet North Canterbury beach. I was watching with my compact camera.

Photo of the week.
A favourite view from New Zealand's Mount Cook village is Mount Sefton with its ubiquitous hanging glaciated face. The accompanying Footstool is on the right. Visitors frequently mistake Sefton for Aoraki/Mt Cook. This is especially so when Aoraki is disguised by cloud. Sefton is indeed a magnificent mountain.

Reading Husna’s story, an account of Farid Ahmed and his wife Husna. Both from Bangladesh, they were caught up in the Masjid al-Noor mosque when the 28-year-old Australian terrorist opened fire on March 15, 2019. 51 people, mostly at prayer, were murdered that day at Masjid al-Noor and another Christchurch mosque. Many were injured. Farid, a paraplegic in a wheelchair, survived. His treasured Husna did not. Their daughter, Shifa, was at school. It is a compelling, albeit harrowing read. Some of the story is, indeed, appalling, particularly the aftermath of the al-Noor shooting. But it is also a story of courage and a willingness to forgive. What wonderful people. 'They are us,' our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, famously said. I will need to track down Farid Ahmed and invite him to ring the New Zealand World Peace Bell. Commemorating the March 15, 2019 Christchurch mosques massacre is one of our official events.
