Kia ora! As the sun rises for a new day, our last artist we are featuring before we open the doors to made 26, is Michael Parekōwhai, and we are utterly stoked he is joining us for the 4th time.

Michael is an Auckland-based sculptor, photographer and installation artist of Mãori (Ngā Ariki Kaiputahi, Ngāti Whakarongo) and Pākehā descent, highly regarded for his daring culturally thematic explorations, Pop (but conceptualist) accessibility, impeccable industrial finish and robust physical presence. Educated at Elam School of Fine Arts, Michael gained his BFA in 1990 and a MFA in 2000.

Kia ora! Today we feature Phil Burnett, his 2nd show with made & we can't wait to see his new work.

Phil:

I am a Huia based artist.
In 2024 I held my first solo exhibition at The Upstairs Gallery, Titirangi.
My paintings focus on landscapes, and sometimes a classic vehicle for fun

Today we feature Karla Harris. She's in the made committee with this being her fourth show. We're buzzing to see what Karla has crafted for made.

Karla says

This year my art is about breaking out of the boxes we have put ourselves in..
We can choose to reform our thinking & how we move in the spaces around us.
Freedom of movement & exploration of form. Forging new paths.
Open to interpretation, the viewer is encouraged to make their own decision as to what the works may mean for them.
There's no judgement, nor right or wrong way to see my art.

Today we feature Tuula Faire who joins our show for her 4th time, and we're delighted.

Tuula is of Finnish descent, and had a career in Australia working in Graphic Design and Art Direction. Now practicing her own art – mainly with semi-realistic and abstract paintings and drawings using acrylics and mixed media. Also exploring works using found beach items - seashells, beach wood, and rocks on ornaments and wall hangings.
Having set up her studio ‘Upland Road Art Studio’ in Huia, she is very happy to be inspired by the beautiful nature around us and receive inspiration.

Kia ora! Today we feature Rachael Burke, excited she's showing her work for her 5th show with made.

Rachael Burke is a multidisciplinary artist from Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.

Focusing on the inner landscape of the self, her practice spans sculpture, photography, painting, and collage. Her work accumulates and transforms through repeated layering of photographic images, paint and collage, forming complex compositions that create a visual dialogue between internal and external states of being.

Today we feature Pien Wise, her 3rd show with made and we're rapt she's exhibiting.

I have been local Huia community member for over 19 years and feel very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place with so many cool people!

Pien:

I was lucky enough to be brought up by a very creative mother, who passed on her creative passion to me!
Creativity gives me great joy, a nice outlet and definitely something I incorporate into all areas of life.
My paintings are always bright and lighthearted. I work with liquid watercolour, watercolour pencils and fineliner pens.

the flow and rhythm of the cursive script
the flow of letters and words
allows me to meditate on the swirl
or shape or line
like a tūī to harakeke nectar
i dip my brush into the ink
with relish
awash with a feeling of being connected
to a genetic memory
of ancestor scribes
and a deep connection I feel to the land
and the trees and the hills
and sea

Today we feature Steph Taylor, her first show with made. We can hardly wait to see her work!

Steph has lived in Huia on and off since a teenager and spends a lot of her time on the road as a full-time artist capturing Kiwiana in its essence.

Her work blends her own photography with acrylic paint, textured papers, and digital artistry to create vibrant, whimsical compositions.

Specialising in large outdoor aluminium prints and limited-edition frames, Steph's art brings character, colour, and a touch of Kiwi magic to homes, gardens, and public spaces across Aotearoa.

Today we feature Bob Martin joining us for his 3rd show with made. We can't wait to see his new work!

Bob:

I developed an interest in working with interesting found driftwood pieces and making kitchen cutting boards while living and travelling in a motorhome full time a few years ago. As I could create pieces in between various seasonal jobs I was able to sell at markets all around NZ. Returning to our house in Huia I continue to work with wood when I can.
The harmonogram drawings are produced on my homemade harmonograph originally invented in the 1840s. I have a 50 year interest in these pendulum driven machines, this my 3rd and still developing it and is now nearly 2 metres tall!

Today we feature Pauline Martin. This is Pauline's 3rd show with us and we're delighted!

Pauline:

I started drawing and painting the real world when I was a child: dogs, cats, people, trees - anything.
Travelling gave me more scope for developing my cartoon style.
There is always a funny side to life.
I also make realistic, humorous pieces in clay.

Today we feature Marie McNeill who joins us for her fourth show with made. We're eager to see what Marie will have to offer.

Marie:

I live on and am inspired by the wonderful Manukau coastline.
As a Westie I am surrounded by ever changing views that invoke a desire to preserve and share my response …

This year I have focused on combining found driftwood of human origin, boat and building flotsam found in the Manukau Harbour with ceramic representations of the area.

Lately I have needed to process what is going on with the troubles of the world in paint. I feel urgency like none before to see what has been done, the inaction and possibilities for our future.

Here’s to peace.
