On June 2, 1968, while returning from Hawaii to Los Angeles on a commercial flight, Elvis Presley created an unforgettable experience for fellow passengers when he left the first-class cabin and joined members of The Young Americans, who were seated in economy after entertaining U.S. troops in Vietnam. Hearing them singing and rehearsing, Elvis stepped through the curtain with a cigar and drink in hand, mingling with passengers, singing along, signing autographs, and sharing his trademark warmth and charisma. The moment was especially remarkable given his complicated relationship with flying, which reportedly began after a frightening engine failure on a tour flight in 1956 that deeply upset his mother, Gladys Presley.
