Here’s something I’ve learned after years behind the camera.

Anticipation. Catching the little changes before they become the moment.

A father trying not to show he’s emotional yet. Hands that find each other before the moment asks them to. Laughter spilling out of friend groups over inside jokes. A couple stealing a quiet kiss when they think no one is looking. A grandmother holding it together during the vows.

The real moment often lasts only a fraction of a second. If you wait for it to happen, you’ve already missed it.

So much of this job is instinct built over time. Years of observing people, understanding how weddings flow, and recognising emotion before it fully surfaces. Not just at weddings, but in everyday life too - walking the streets, travelling, noticing light, movement and connection.

Of course photography requires an eye, but just as much it’s about learning to recognise when something is about to unfold.

And the funny thing is: most people never realise how mentally exhausting that can be as a wedding photographer. For 10+ hours, your mind is always scanning, always anticipating, always trying to stay one step ahead of real life unfolding in front of you.

But that’s also what I love about it.

Because photography isn’t only about pressing the shutter at the right time. It’s about feeling a moment coming before it arrives. Almost like experiencing the future and the present at the same time. The more I think about it, the more fascinating that feels to me.

Dinner scenes from Anniek & Daan’s beautiful wedding at .

One thing I always tell people: weddings don’t go exactly as planned, and that’s fine. This dinner is a good example.

Everything was set up for outside. It had been one of those proper summer days, hot and humid from start to finish. Then right as dinner was about to start, the rain came down. The team moved everything inside without making it feel like a big deal.

For me it also meant a pretty big shift on the spot. You go from photographing in open air with plenty of natural light to working under a tent where it got dark fast, which means pushing your settings and finding light where you can. Not every shot works in those conditions, but when they do it feels good.

Happy with these! And the dinner itself was just a really nice, warm evening with good people.

The first wedding back after winter always reminds me why I started.

The nerves are back. The eye is sharp. Seeing light differently and anticipating moments before they happen. But once the day unfolds, you realise you never really left.

Three weddings in and the season is just getting started! My favourite time of year.

Many couples debate whether to include photography during these moments. And yes, it depends on your timeline, budget, and priorities. But if I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t skip it! The getting-ready phase captures a part of your day that is so much fun and can never be recreated.

It’s the anticipation, the nerves, the laughter with your closest family, and the quiet moments of reflection. It’s the first time you see yourself in the dress or suit you’ve dreamed of for months, maybe years. I mean..that’s special right?

These moments may feel small at the time, but in the story of your wedding day, they are big. They add depth, emotion, and context to your wedding album, giving your photos a sense of continuity and richness.

When we begin your album with getting-ready shots, it’s always meaningful and sets the tone for the entire story of your day.

Think of it as the opening chapter of a book. Skipping it is like leaving the prologue out; you’d be missing a piece. So yes, I’m a big fan of photographing the getting-ready moments!
