Mishtuni-di

Made this portrait for Madhuparna Dasgupta in Kolkata this year. We call her Mishtuni di (her nickname is Mishtuni and di is short for didi- sister in Hindi and Bengali). She is not only our lively, talented and beautiful sister-in-law but also our family music teacher. Her presence and music mentoring adds so much joy to my life every week. I remember my love for music and how therapeutic it is for me, every time I sit in her class. We discuss many songs and sing together and also do vocal practice (Riyaz) which require quite some focus and mindfulness. I wish the same joy, refreshing musical moments in her life. Happy birthday Mishtuni di! 🙌🤗❤️

Mishtir factory

Inside a sweet factory

I had never tasted mishti (bengali sweets) so heavenly as the ones that came out fresh from this sweet factory just round the corner at my uncle’s place in West Bengali, India. The texture, freshness, mouthfeel, level of sweetness and taste felt like it must have been prepared by a Michelin star chef!

I went to see where exactly these sweets are sourced from. It was a humble setup with hard-working and calm craftsmen immersed in creating the order of the day.

It was morning time and the light was very dim inside but the steam coming out of boiling milk imparted a mysterious and intriguing atmosphere to the otherwise simple space. And it smelled so tempting everywhere. I was also in awe of the scale of production done by just a few men. The warm green walls and pops of red and oranges were an added visual treats.

The village where my mother grew up
Where I spent most of my summer vacations
Where the loving presence of my grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, I took for granted
Where I learnt about fruit trees, fishes and snakes- how they shed their skins
Where the drumbeats of passing trains interrupted our mid-day conversations and bedtime stories
Where mornings began too early, but rustic
Where evenings turned pink and coral
And the smell of kerosene lanterns, burnt coconut coir and camphor filled the heavy air.
Where I truly felt like a child that I was
And still am.

Served 🍛 Part 2

Homemade Siddu, served by a Himachali family in Chandigarh

A slice of Indian hospitality and love from every family I visited in India. Needless to say, in India love is expressed through food and the way it’s served (with so much love and devotion). Sometimes, it is ordered especially for the guests. Some people can afford a daily home cook who will cook as per brief. But most of the times, the women of the household are expected and are culturally tuned, to disappear into the realms of spices and available ingredients and magically create complicated dishes in record time. Although, I never visited anyone unannounced- the #1 goal being spending some quality time, I still felt empathetic, grateful, and guilty at the same time gorging on these delicacies. Every nibble reminded me of the love, pain and passion with which someone known or a stranger might have created the dishes.

This is Renu didi. She lives in her sweet mango world. She is from Nepal but many years back she moved to Chandigarh with her family. She is a loving mother, caring, kind, and spiritual. I guess it comes from the fact that she doesn’t forget to love herself. I enjoyed photographing her in her mango garden and she loved being photographed and seen.

P.S: Her family back in Nepal is okay and safe. 🙏
