I'm excited because this weekend I will be photographing birds of prey!

I'm hosting a (Dutch) workshop near Rotterdam (only a couple of spots left if you'd want to participate).

I will be dropping some gems on hoe to photograph these magnificent animals in the upcoming days.

When you talk about choosing a background a lot of people think you need to go to the heather, the forrest or the beach but that's not true at all.

I photographed this little guy in 2009.

The difference between the first and second photo is a mere centimeters. But the effect couldn't be bigger!

Did you know I took this photo with the startset consisting of the Nikon D50 and the 55 - 200 mm f/ 4.5 - 6.5 lens?

A true beginners / starter set.

I made the photograph at

Have you recently calibrated the colors of your screen? For example with a Datacolor Spyder?

This is good to do even if you can't prevent other people from seeing your photo's to dark or light. At least your photo's will look good when they are sent of to the printer (if you provide the right color profile ofcourse).

So this is your reminder to grab your calibration tool and get to it!

I want to get to know you a bit better, so;

If you could own one animal and if could be any kind of animal z what would you choose?

Would you go exotic or stay mainstream?

I've owned a rabbit, hamsters, guinea pigs and I currently own two cats.

Even though I find it highly fascinating when someone owns an exotic animal like a snake, owl or reptile I probably wouldn't choose for it myself because they are more high maintenance than "regular" pets like cats and guinea pigs.

I might want to take a dog in the future but since my husband and me work 32 hours a week I don't feel like it would fit in our live. Especially since I prefer a more wolf-like dog and they need a lot of walking and challenging.

What about you?

What place do you call home?

And is that home where your house is or somewhere else? ;).

I live in Amersfoort and I feel really at home in this city. In the past, during my college years I lived in the Hague but somehow that city never appealed to me, I never REALLY felt at home there so I was happy when I was able to move to Amersfoort and live in the city where a majority of my friends live and with family close by too.

Hello! 👋🏻

It has been a while since I introduced myself and I always think it's nice to know the face behind an account. Makes it more personal.

I'm Merel Bormans and I'm the founder of / and I'm working every day to bring you as much awesome content as I can.

I've been photographing since I was around 9 years old, somewhere around that age I was gifted my very first camera. Since then me and my mother went on frequent zoo trips to photograph there and we would evaluate the photographs once they where developed afterwards. She is the single most influential person when it comes to my photography ❤️.

This gives me around 22 years of photography experience (don't do the math on me, ok? 😜).

If you want to see my personal photography you can check .

I'm also mother of two wonderful boys named Finten and Wander and together with my husband the four of us live in Amersfoort with our two cats Gin and Tonic.

My dayjob consists of being an application consultant at Stater. But at night (or rather the evening) I come alive and work on all the courses I provide you with. My newest addition will be a (free to follow) composition bootcamp. I'm working on the Dutch version first and once that is done I can translate it and bring it to the English website as well :).

I would love to get to know you guys as well! Will you please introduce yourselves a bit?

The coming days I will ask a few questions about you as well. I would love to get personal ❤️.

Keep on clicking! Merel

There is another way to determine the shape of the background bokeh, apart from what I told yesterday.

This is something fun to do for Christmas or Valentine's cards.

You can cut out a small shape from a paper or cardboard that doesn't let through any other light and put that in front of your lens.

That gives you a result like this photo.

Did you know the shape of this bokeh is dependant on your aperture?

If an aperture doesn't have many blades the form of the bokeh becomes more corned while more aperture blades translates to a more round shape.

Sunday's, they are o so beautiful!

To capture them, you need to photograph in the direction of the sun.

It works best when the sun itself is not in sight but "blocked" by something, like the clouds in this photo.

There also needs to be a sort of filtering going on where parts of the light are let through and others not. This creates beams of light with shadow in between. The light van be blocked by clouds or leaves and twigs of trees for example.

Finally there needs to be something that can reflect/change the direction of the light like dust or moist in the air.

Sunbeams are easiest spotted when the sun is still low.

NEVER EVER place your subject in the dead center of your photograph!

This is advice a lot of novice photographers get to hear. But is it really true? Are you really never allowed to put your subject in the center? Or is this acutally bogus advice?

I say, you can place your subject right in the center, no problem at all. But do so "mindfully". Make sure the shot stays interesting, for example because there is a pattern going on or because there is symmetry or leading lines within the picture.

Here are some great examples by the following photographers:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Still believe you can never ever place your subject in the deadcenter of the photograph? Think again.

What do you think?

Simplicity and negative space put all attention on these two cute foals. Because the background is white there is nothing distracting from the foals in the picture.

This is a composition technique you can also use. In this technique you rely on the simplicity of the picture to guide your viewers eye automatically to the only thing in the frame to happen and I think .reflectionss did a great job doing so.

What do you think about this photograph?
