🇳🇬 INDEPENDENCE IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL OUR CHILDREN ARE SAFE
Look closely at this picture.
The woman in the middle carries the Nigerian flag with care. Her eyes carry the colours of our nation — green and white — symbolising love for Nigeria and the responsibility of a true Nigerian: to protect, to help, to stand in the gap, and to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Beside her is a Nigerian child.
She represents millions of Nigerian children whose only request should be simple:
“Protect me.”
Protect me from violence.
Protect me from abuse.
Protect me from exploitation.
Protect me from molestation.
Protect me from those who take advantage of my innocence and the trust placed in them.
And then, on the other side, we see the red eyes.
They represent those who may look like ordinary human beings but hide dangerous intentions towards children — the predators who prey on innocence, violate trust and leave wounds that may remain long after childhood is gone.
A child should never have to learn fear from the very people who are supposed to protect them.
Nigeria, our children are not just our future. They are our responsibility today.
The Nigerian Constitution, child-protection laws and Nigeria's international obligations recognise the need to protect children from violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect. UNICEF's recent assessment of Nigeria's child-protection system also stresses stronger enforcement, better services, adequate resources and coordinated action across government and communities.

So on this Independence Day, this is more than a celebration.
It is a reminder to parents, guardians, teachers, religious and traditional leaders, communities, the Nigeria Police Force, social services, the Federal and State Ministries responsible for Women Affairs and Social Development, NAPTIP, justice institutions and every authority entrusted with the welfare of children:
OUR CHILDREN NEED US.
Let us listen when they speak.
Let us believe them when they report abuse.
Let us investigate.
Let us hold perpetrators accountable.
Let us provide safe places for children to grow.
Let us give survivors the care and support they deserve.
Because if we can proudly hold the Nigerian flag,
we must also be willing to protect the Nigerian child. 🇳🇬
A flag can be replaced.
A childhood cannot.
Innocence cannot simply be restored.
And a child's scars should never be the price of our silence.
This Independence Day, let us ask ourselves:
What kind of Nigeria are we building for our children?
A Nigeria where children are protected?
A Nigeria where they are heard?
A Nigeria where they can grow without fear?
That Nigeria must begin with us.
🇳🇬 Happy Independence Day, Nigeria.
💚🤍💚 Protect the child. Protect the future. Protect Nigeria.
