LOTUNG: THE DYING TONGUE OF UGEP THAT WE MUST SAVE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

A Call to the Obol Lopon Council, Sons and Daughters of Ugep, and All Lovers of Our Cultural Heritage.

We all speak Lokaa, but hidden within our linguistic heritage is another tongue that is gradually disappearing—a language known as LOTUNG.

Lotung is more than a language; it is a living connection to our history, spirituality, and ancestral identity.

It is the language our fathers brought from Akpa. It is the language associated with the story of Edem Omini Yakpa and the Saviour Stone that saved our people. It is the language Atewa Wuya uses to bless the new yam, and the language in which Ijiman Nsibidi sings when the Obol Lopon makes his appearance.

Lotung is a sacred part of our traditional heritage and our means of communicating with our God during certain traditional rites.

But today, we must ask ourselves a painful question:

How many of our young men and women can speak even one complete sentence in Lotung?

Sadly, knowledge of the language among the younger generation appears to be extremely limited. According to the concerns raised by those familiar with its present state, the few people who still speak it fluently are elderly men in Ijiman and Okurubong, many of whom are above 70 years old.

If urgent steps are not taken to document, teach, and preserve Lotung, we risk losing this invaluable part of our identity within the next 20 to 30 years.

Imagine a future Ugep where our children can speak Lokaa but cannot understand the sacred words, expressions, and chants that have accompanied our traditional institutions for generations.

Imagine a Leboku celebration where the rituals remain, but the younger generation no longer understands the language in which some of those rituals are performed.

That would be a cultural loss whose consequences could extend far beyond language.

THE PROPOSAL: LET US ESTABLISH A LOTUNG LANGUAGE SCHOOL

To prevent this potential cultural tragedy, I propose that the Obol Lopon Council take the lead in establishing a structured Lotung language preservation and learning programme.

Here is how it could work:

1. Identify and Engage the Custodians of Lotung

The Obol Lopon Council should identify five elderly men from Ijiman and Okurubong who are fluent in Lotung and willing to teach the younger generation.

Their knowledge should be recognised as a valuable cultural resource worthy of preservation.

2. Establish an Evening Language School

A designated space at the Obol Lopon's Palace or another suitable location could serve as the learning centre.

Classes could hold in the evenings, allowing students, workers, and other interested participants to attend.

3. Introduce a Structured Enrolment Programme

An affordable enrolment fee could be introduced for interested sons and daughters of Ugep who wish to learn the language over a specified period.

The programme should have clear learning objectives, regular lessons, and a system for assessing students' progress.

4. Provide Financial Support for the Elderly Tutors

Part of the revenue generated could be used to compensate the tutors fairly for their time, knowledge, and dedication.

At their age, some of these elders may find it increasingly difficult to sustain themselves through farming alone. This initiative would provide them with an additional source of income while allowing them to pass their knowledge to future generations.

5. Document the Language for Future Generations

Beyond classroom teaching, the programme should record Lotung words, phrases, stories, chants, and relevant cultural expressions, with the guidance and consent of the appropriate traditional custodians.

Audio recordings, written materials, and digital archives could ensure that the knowledge survives even as the older generation passes on.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This initiative would achieve three important objectives.

First, it would help preserve a language that forms part of Ugep's cultural and spiritual heritage.

Second, it would strengthen the connection between the younger generation and the traditions of their ancestors, particularly those associated with Leboku and other traditional rites.

Third, it would create an opportunity to support elderly cultural custodians while establishing a sustainable programme for passing their knowledge to future generations.

Most importantly, it would send a clear message that Ugep is not only interested in celebrating its culture but is also willing to invest in preserving it.

A FINAL CALL TO ACTION

The responsibility to preserve our heritage cannot rest on the shoulders of elderly men alone. It requires the commitment of our traditional institutions, community leaders, cultural organisations, and every son and daughter of Ugep who understands the value of our identity.

The Obol Lopon Council has an opportunity to champion an initiative that future generations could remember with gratitude.

We cannot continue to celebrate our traditions while allowing the language that gives meaning to some of them to disappear.

Let us act while the custodians of this knowledge are still alive and able to teach us.

Let us bring Lotung back into our homes, our classrooms, our cultural institutions, and the consciousness of our young people.

Because when a language dies, we risk losing more than words. We risk losing the stories, expressions, and accumulated knowledge that those words carry.

LOTUNG MUST NOT DIE WITH OUR ELDERS. LET US SAVE IT NOW!

What do you think about this proposal? Should the Obol Lopon Council establish a Lotung language school in Ugep? Let's discuss.

REMEMBERING UBI EBAMTI AND UBI OFFIONG: SONS OF OUR LAND

Today, we reflect on the historic images of Ubi Ebamti and Ubi Offiong, two sons of our land captured in traditional Ekoi regalia.

Their photographs offer a glimpse into our ancestral heritage, reminding us of the importance of preserving Ugep’s history, culture, and identity for future generations.

As time passes, documenting these memories becomes essential to ensuring that our history is never forgotten.
