If it’s working, why disrupt it?

*Tested. Trusted. Time to Finish Strong: Why Aguata Must Return Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor, FNSE*

*By Dr. Mike Ikpeama Ilouno*
*Political and Public Affairs Analyst*

In the often turbulent landscape of Nigerian politics, where promises are made with ease and forgotten with even greater speed, it is both rare and refreshing to encounter a public servant who not only keeps faith with his people but exceeds expectations within record time.

Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor, FNSE, representing Aguata Federal Constituency, has distinguished himself as one of such rare breeds.

Within just *one year and eight months*, he has effectively delivered on the core pillars of his campaign manifesto. This is not mere political rhetoric, it is verifiable, measurable, and visible across communities in Aguata. At a time when constituents are accustomed to waiting endlessly for dividends of democracy, his performance has reset expectations and restored confidence in representation.

It is therefore no surprise that conversations around his second term have taken center stage. And rightly so.

The guiding question before the people of Aguata is simple and timeless:
*If it’s working, why disrupt it?*
This is not just a slogan, it is a principle rooted in logic, governance stability, and strategic continuity. Development is not a one-season affair. It requires consistency, consolidation, and the opportunity to build on an already solid foundation.

Hon. Okafor has laid that foundation.

Beyond performance, there is also the important matter of political balance and equity. Aguata’s established zoning understanding supports the natural progression of leadership, ensuring fairness and inclusion. By this arrangement, Hon. Okafor not only qualifies but rightfully deserves the opportunity to complete his second term in the Green Chambers.

Yet, as expected in any political environment, success often attracts criticism, some constructive, others not.
A closer examination of the dissenting voices reveals a pattern. A number of critics are individuals whose expectations of personal patronage were not met. Others are influenced by external interests, promoting narratives that lack both context and understanding of Aguata’s unique political dynamics.

However, what remains remarkable is Hon. Okafor’s response to these provocations.
He has chosen the higher road.
Maintaining a calm, professional, and disciplined approach, he has refused to be drawn into unnecessary controversies. Instead, he continues to let his work speak, quietly, consistently, and effectively. This level of decorum in public office is not just commendable; it is essential for sustainable governance.
Leadership is not merely about noise; it is about impact.
And impact is what Aguata has witnessed.

As the 2027 electoral horizon gradually comes into view, the decision before the people is not complicated. It is a choice between proven performance and uncertain alternatives; between continuity and disruption; between consolidation and regression.
Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor, FNSE, has proven himself capable, dependable, and focused. He has earned not just another term, but the trust required to complete what he has started.

Aguata must not gamble with progress.

The path forward is clear:

*Tested. Trusted. Time to Finish Strong.*

Public Discourse: Why the Elite Must Step Into the Conversation

In every thriving political ecosystem, the role of informed elites is not optional, it is essential. Their voice provides historical context, guards against manipulation, and ensures continuity in representation. The unfolding political narrative in Aguata Federal Constituency once again underscores this urgent necessity.

A careful review of Aguata’s political history reveals a consistent pattern. Representatives from Aguata South have traditionally enjoyed uninterrupted two-term tenures at the Green Chambers. Figures such as Nze Chidi Duru of Nkpologwu and Hon. Mrs. Eucharia Azodo of Amesi each completed eight years in office. These extended tenures allowed them to build legislative expertise, attain ranking status, and consolidate influence for their constituencies.

However, the experience of Aguata North tells a different story.

Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji of Ezinifite, despite a promising first term, saw his tenure abruptly cut short. The strategy deployed at the time was subtle yet effective: a sustained narrative questioning his performance, combined with the projection of an alternative candidate from Aguata South. This narrative gained traction, influenced public perception, and ultimately disrupted what could have been a path to experienced, ranking representation for Aguata North.

Today, history appears to be repeating itself.

Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor of Igbokwu, currently serving his first term, has declared his intention to seek re-election. Predictably, within weeks, a wave of disparaging commentary has emerged, largely driven by previously inactive actors in Aguata’s political space. Even more concerning is the adoption of misleading comparisons, particularly the attempt to measure legislative performance against that of a Local Government Chairman, an executive role with direct access to internally generated revenue and monthly federal allocations.

Such comparisons are not only analytically flawed but deliberately misleading. Legislative effectiveness operates within entirely different parameters, focused on lawmaking, oversight, and constituency facilitation, rather than direct control of funds.

More revealing, however, is the underlying strategy: the promotion of another Aguata South candidate, this time, a former two-term Local Government Chairman, to replace a sitting Aguata North representative who is only midway through his first term.

This raises a critical question:
Is this about performance, or a calculated attempt to once again truncate Aguata North’s opportunity to build sustained legislative influence?

Encouragingly, this time, the response has been different.

The elites of Aguata North, leaders, stakeholders, and informed voices, are no longer silent observers. Having learned from past missteps, they are actively engaging in the conversation, challenging misleading narratives, and offering informed perspectives. Their growing consensus reflects a collective resolve: to support continuity, defend equitable representation, and allow their representative the opportunity to consolidate on his first-term achievements.

This is not merely about an individual. It is about institutional memory, fairness, and the long-term political strength of Aguata North within the National Assembly.

When elites disengage, misinformation thrives. But when they step forward, they provide clarity, balance, and direction.

The lesson is clear:

Sustainable representation requires vigilance, unity, and the courage of informed voices to speak when it matters most.

*The Facts Cannot Be Bent: Setting the Record Straight on Aguata’s Representation*

*History documented. Judgment delivered. Record settled.*

By Dr. Mike Ikpeama Ilouno

Public discourse thrives on facts. When false statistics are deliberately circulated to distort political history, silence becomes complicity. It has therefore become necessary to set the record straight regarding the representation of Aguata Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives since 1999.
Let us proceed with law, dates, and arithmetic, not propaganda.

*The Controversy: 14–14 or 16–12?*
Certain opposition elements have peddled the claim that representation between what is politically referred to (for convenience) as Aguata South (Aguata I) and Aguata North (Aguata II) stands at 14 years apiece.

That claim is demonstrably false.

The confusion, whether deliberate or ignorant, stems from the disputed 2003 election involving *Okey Enemuo and Chidi Duru.*

The law has already resolved that dispute. The courts spoke clearly. And the record is intact.

*The 2003 Legal History,What the Courts Actually Decided*

The Election
• Election held: *12 April 2003*
• Form EC8E (i) issued: *16 April 2003*
• Dr. Okey Enemuo was initially declared by the Returning Officer.
• Sworn in: *3 June 2003*
However, *Chief Chidi Duru* challenged that declaration before the Justice G.M. Nabaruma-led Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka. (NB: Justice G.M. Nabaruma led First Anambra State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka)
His argument was straightforward:
He was the properly cleared PDP candidate and the rightful winner.

*Tribunal Judgment -15 August 2003 (Awka)*

The five-man Nabaruma Tribunal:
• Reversed INEC’s declaration.
• Declared Chidi Duru the duly sponsored PDP candidate.
• Affirmed he won the election.
• Directed issuance of Form EC8E (1) to him.
Dr. Enemuo appealed.

*Court of Appeal Judgment - 24 February 2004 (Enugu)*

In Dr. Okey Enemuo v. Chief Chidi Duru (CA/E/EPT/27/2003), the Court of Appeal, the apex court for House of Representatives election matters, upheld the Tribunal’s decision.
Panel:
• Mahmud Mohammed (Presided)
• Clara Bata Ogunbiyi
• John Afolabi Fabiyi (Delivered Lead Judgment)
The Appeal Court:
• Affirmed Duru as the validly elected member.
• Upheld that Enemuo was not the lawful contestant.
• Sustained the Tribunal’s ruling in full.
The legal consequence was clear:
Dr. Okey Enemuo’s tenure was nullified.
He was deemed not to have been validly elected.
His period in office was voided.
Chief Chidi Duru was sworn in on *3 March 2004* to complete the 5th Assembly.
He was also paid full entitlements for the months lost during the legal dispute.
Legally and constitutionally, the seat belonged to Duru, uninterrupted.

*Even If One Attempts Arithmetic…*

Let us indulge the opposition’s flawed mathematics.
Timeline:
• Sworn in: 3 June 2003
• Tribunal judgment: 15 August 2003 (~3 months)
• Appeal dismissed: 24 February 2004 (~6 additional months)
• Total disputed period: ~9 months
That period was completely nullified.
In law, a void act confers no rights.
Even if someone insists on counting it (contrary to judicial ruling), it does not amount to one full year.

Therefore:
It cannot reduce Aguata South’s tenure from 16 years to 14 years.
The claim collapses both legally and arithmetically.

*The Verified Chronology of Representation (1999–2027)*

*1999 - 2003 (4th Assembly)*

*Chidi Duru* - Aguata South

*2003–2007 (5th Assembly)*

Chidi Duru - Aguata South

*2007 - 2011 (6th Assembly)*

*Chukwuma Umeoji* – Aguata North

*2011–2015 (7th Assembly)*

*Eucharia Azodo* – Aguata South

*2015–2019 (8th Assembly)*

*Eucharia Azodo* – Aguata South

*2019–2023 (9th Assembly)*

*Chukwuma Umeoji* – Aguata North

*2023–2027 (10th Assembly)*

*Dominic Ifeanyi Okafor* – Aguata North

*The Arithmetic*

*Aguata South:*

1999–2007 = 8 years
2011–2019 = 8 years
Total = 16 uninterrupted, legally recognized years

*Aguata North:*
2007–2011 = 4 years
2019–2023 = 4 years
2023–2027 = 4 years

Total by 2027 = *12 years*
There is no 14–14.
There never was.
There cannot be.

What This Means Going Forward
By 2027, Aguata North will stand at 12 cumulative years.
For balance with Aguata South’s 16 years, Aguata North requires one additional uninterrupted term, 2027 – 2031, to reach parity.
This is not agitation.
It is arithmetic.
This is not sentiment.
It is documented judicial history.
This is not sectionalism.
It is equity.
(For clarity, the North/South nomenclature is a political convenience, not a constitutional subdivision.)

*Conclusion*

The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu on 24 February 2004 settled this matter permanently.

Chief Chidi Duru lawfully completed two terms.

Dr. Okey Enemuo’s brief occupancy was nullified in law and in fact.

Sixteen years for Aguata South.

Twelve years for Aguata North by 2027.

Parity demands completion to 2031.

Facts are stubborn.

Court judgments are final.

Arithmetic does not negotiate.

And history cannot be rewritten by press releases.

From Compassion to Confidence: Aguata Rallies Behind Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor After Historic Birthday Outreach

In what has now been widely described as a defining moment in people-centered leadership, Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor, Member Representing Aguata Federal Constituency, marked his birthday on March 30th in a manner that has since resonated deeply across communities, hosting orphans, the elderly, and the most vulnerable at St. Martin’s Home.

Far from a ceremonial gathering, the event evolved into a powerful convergence of compassion, leadership, and public affirmation, drawing an unprecedented cross-section of society. Present were political stalwarts across the constituency, councilors, respected religious leaders, revered traditional rulers, and representatives of the Association of Persons with Disabilities, each bearing witness to what many described as “leadership with a human face.”

At the heart of the occasion was a landmark intervention: the donation and commissioning of a 30KVA generator to St. Martin’s Home. This critical infrastructure not only addresses a longstanding need but symbolizes a deeper commitment to dignity, care, and sustainable support for society’s most vulnerable.

What followed was even more significant.

In a rare and spontaneous show of unity, voices across the gathering rose in resounding prayers, endorsements, and votes of confidence for Hon. Okafor. The disability community, deeply moved by the gesture, offered heartfelt prayers and reaffirmed their unwavering support. Political leaders and stakeholders echoed similar sentiments, describing his leadership as responsive, inclusive, and worthy of continuity.

Observers note that beyond the goodwill generated, the event has effectively redefined the political atmosphere within Aguata, shifting focus from rhetoric to measurable compassion and visible impact.

For many this was not just a birthday celebration, it was a statement.

A statement that leadership is not merely about occupying office, but about touching lives.

A statement that the people of Aguata recognize and reward sincerity, empathy, and performance.

And increasingly, a statement that the call for continuity is growing louder across all segments of the constituency.

As momentum builds toward the next electoral cycle, the March 30th outreach stands as both a reflection of past commitment and a signal of future direction.

The message from Aguata is becoming unmistakably clear:
Leadership that serves the people will always find its voice in the people.

A birthday marked by compassion.
A constituency united in confidence.
A leadership defined by impact.
