Growing up, we were made to understand that during the time of our forefathers, it was mostly the elders who performed Egungun rites. In Yorubaland, many people believe that the identity of the person beneath the Èkù (Egungun costume) should remain unknown, as Egungun is regarded as Ara Orun, the spirits of the ancestors.

Back then, wearing the Èkù was not something just anyone could attempt. But today, things appear to be changing. We now see young people, including children, wearing Egungun costumes and participating in the tradition.

This brings us to an important question: Has the Egungun tradition been transformed over the years, or has civilisation changed the way our culture is practised?

I would love to hear from those who understand this tradition deeply. What was it like in the days of our forefathers, and what has changed today?
