Here's the most phenomenal nurse I've ever met.
‎This photo series tells the story of one whom I've mirrored wisdom, courage, and a deep hunger for excellence from. It's still puzzling to me that after your successful first degree as a dental therapist, you prudently sourced out ways to begin funding another degree in Nursing Science. You silently advanced in your dream and only made it known to us when it was already too late to discourage you. The University of Maiduguri is 1,270 miles away from home and situated in the state with the largest military deployment for the fight against terrorism at the time. Maiduguri to me sounded like a war front, and when you told me that was where you'd decided to do your studies, one of your reasons being that you wanted to learn where you could possibly meet the worst and the best cases, I knew you wanted to learn indeed. I kept a numb face, but I was deeply afraid. My fear quickly ceased when I couldn't read any fear on your very beautiful face. Then I was convinced there was a big spirit behind your guts, my effortlessly calm and courageous sister.
‎I remember the day I dressed up to go for my first practical class in photography. I playfully picked a torchlight 🔦 and kept flashing it on you, mimicking photographers. I'm glad I can now flash real strobe lights 📸 on you and make arts out of them. And to celebrate you in the face of the world, my dear Sister, you didn't hit these milestones by luck; you went for them with all you could lay hold on, and I won't talk about the big challenges you faced in this journey. But thanks be to God who helped you.
‎Congratulations on your successful academic journey to becoming a nurse.

‎Today I turned 26. Thank God.

‎It’s been 5 years since 2020 — the year my life began a drastic reform, shaping who I’m becoming today. That year, one of the scriptures God gave me to grow with was the book of Isaiah. Here are some verses that have anchored me:

‎Isaiah 40:28-31
‎Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?... He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength... But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary...

‎Isaiah 46:9-10
‎Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else... declaring the end from the beginning... My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.

‎Isaiah 50:4
‎The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary...

‎Isaiah 54:16-17
‎I have created the smith... and the waster to destroy. No weapon formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn...

‎Isaiah 55:10-11
‎As the rain and snow come down from heaven... so shall my word be... it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please...

‎Isaiah 60:15
‎Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated... I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

‎Isaiah 66:9
‎Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD... I don’t cause conception and then deny birth.

‎These words have shaped me, sustained me, and they still guide me today. God is faithful.

Reading is far from what I do for a hubby, but when I get a book I find captivating, I read it heart to heart. Things Fall apart is one of those few books I've read and it was just in 2021. Most pages of my copy had sketches, underlined words and tiny writings. All in my effort to understand the author. Then a scene opened an art inspiration for me which I took note of, only to find a means to create it 4 years later as made her call for artists to exhibit works in honor of this giant Chinua Achebe, whose writing has greatly impacted me.
This art, made from compositing shapes and colors in photoshop drew inspiration from the sad story of Okonkwo and Ikemefuna- the young promising lad who was offered to Umuofia by Ndi Mbaino to avert a threatened war. There's a scene where Okonkwo stood over the boy with a big stick to make him eat forcefully.
Although he liked the boy, he could not express his love for him or anyone else in tenderness. The only emotion he readily let out was rage.
It explores the weight of masculinity in Okonkwo and the fear that comes with it. Okonkwo's whole life was said to be dominated by fear, fear of failure and of weakness. And so, although he was fond of Ikemefuna, he could not express it outwardly.
I found something significant about these two characters.
Okonkwo's fear was rooted in the boy's name "IKEMEFUNA". A cry to ensure that his ego and identity as a man of strength is protected at all cost. So for his fear of being thought weak, he eventually murdered a boy that called him father. For "ikemefuna" he killed "Ikemefuna".
Let's redefine masculinity but not completely deconstruct it, for the world will lose balance if all men become effeminate.
But men must learn in our time that they can remain masculine and firm and still be able to express emotions of love and care, not just rage.
I'm honored to be exhibiting along side other amazing artists in the Things Fall Apart Festival {details in last slide}. I'm also honored to have my work in a space where the literary icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who I deeply admire will be giving a keynote speech. All in honor of Chinua Achebe. Please be there.
