[Somehow, by divine calculation, the first five persons listed above are my cousins. The list was not made in accordance with the physical size or financial status or political weight or intellectual prowess of an individual. The list was randomly compiled without prejudice. I have, therefore, no apologies].
I am pained, thoroughly pained, that even with the above array of personalities from our land, some of our semi-literate youths [parading fake, oyoyo university degrees], now pose as our path-finders. As our spokespersons. As our leaders!
Something is wrong with our land. Quo vadis? Where are we going?
Our land is not developing because many of our politicians are afraid to confront government at federal and sub-national levels. Our LGAs are jokers. We, as a people, have failed to ask pertinent questions in relevant quarters. Why are we so myopic; so blindfolded; so focusless; so unpatriotic; so DEFT? People take us for a ride so easily.
Beautiful girls from our land; elegant spinsters from land; good-looking widows from our land; dashy grandmothers from our land, often troop out to the homes of politicians of other ethnic groups to serve as errand-girls. For money! For food! They are usually treated with scorn; sometimes, dehumanised and dewomanised. We weep for them, and pray for their “deliverance.”
Today, in some of our communities, 25 – 30-year old men and women become chiefs. Chieftaincy titles are never inherited in our land, am I right?
My grouse against our crumb-seeking youths is that they are extremely rude to elders. They insult elders incautiously, and debase our culture. These youths are, unfortunately, not interested in our future. What they want is “small change” from their pay masters. There is one very raw and loud young man, who, not long ago, could not afford to pay the primary school examination fees for his two daughters. He was helped with TEN thousand Naira [N10,000] by a generous politician from his town. Yet the young man has been campaigning ceaselessly for state creation. Walls, they say, have ears.
I laugh when I see some Ukwuani-Ndosumili people still run around IGNORANTLY campaigning for the creation of Anioma state, not even Ukwuani of Ndokwa state. I find it puzzling. My questions are: Are these people living in Nigeria or not? State creation is no longer a hot button issue in Nigeria. Why don’t they gauge the mood of the nation? Who is interested in state creation now in Nigeria? Why state creation when many existing ones are no more viable? Here, in Delta North, the agitation for state creation is an INDUSTRY!
The principal agitator represents our people in the National Assembly. Let me make it clear, that he is my friend. During the campaigns for the senate, I called to encourage and wish him well. I made him the Chief Presenter when my latest book was presented to the public at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos, on 27 April, 2024 – SEVEN MONTHS AGO. He was represented by his Media Aide: Ifetayo Moses Adeniyi at the event. We are, no doubt, buddies.
I wish, however, to ask some basic questions: why is he calling for a common currency for Africa? Why is he advocating for a common language for the whole of Africa? How will he achieve these? In his capacity as a senator? Does he represent Nigeria in ECOWAS or Africa Union? Where lies his power? Why is he calling for ALL Nigerians to own arms? Are these really what our people voted for him for? Are these Ukwuani-Ndosulili priorities? Again, I am puzzled; yes, puzzled.
I say it for the umpteenth time, that Anioma state CANNOT and will NOT be created. Bad news! Anybody who still believes that it will be created is OLD SKOOL. My friend, the principal agitator, in his heart of hearts, probably knows, that the creation of Anioma state is IMPOSSIBLE. I am yet to understand, why he has chosen to make state creation a pastime for some gullible persons.
Some of our people have definitely lost their ability to reason and retionalise. There is poverty of the mind in our land. There is poverty of logic also in our land.
A few Ukwuani people once said that, “We are Ibos”, because Okowa, an Ika man, has said, “I am Ibo.” This is ridiculous-blatantly ludicrous. Do ALL Ikas say that they are Ibos? Those Ukwuani people should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
A society collapses or crumbles in several ways: one of which, is for the elders and the intelligentsia to be mute, while the ignorant, unschooled and ill-mannered persons call the shots, and direct community affairs.
God bless our land.
