Express bus are considered as one of main transportation in Malaysia, as they connect most of the states throughout Malaysia. Once the express buses were using economy seating in 2+2 configuration, this configuration were slowly disappear due to faster journeys with the introduction of the highways, thus able to distribute passengers and reduce number of passengers board the bus. As such, the business class of 2+1 configuration were widely used throughout Malaysia for comfortable long-haul journeys.

This economy seats were still used until today for short to mid-haul journeys, however with the increasing price of the business class seats for long-haul journeys, the economy seats are much needed for long-haul journeys. As such, some bus operators has re-introduced a limited number of trips for long-haul economy seats. One of the bus operators are Ekspres Musafir under Konsortium Ekspres Mutiara Berhad, where their bus holds the record of the longest travelling bus for high-capacity economy express, as this bus offers a number of 58 seats in 2+2 configuration for over 600km journey. While the bus service offers only 35% of discount than any business class seats, prices can be differ depending on peak and festive seasons.

Our next posts will be focused on express and intercity buses!

With over 113 express bus companies to explore experience on, AREXSpotter will cover excursion and cross-border buses as well... but don't worry, our previous ARCityTransSpotter posts will stay on and remain undeleted.

Our first feature of express bus here is KKKL Group, a joint-venture company between 5 companies, KKKL, KKKL Singapore, LCB Tour, Trans Lim and Terus Nanti. A new express liner...

//As Ampang area is one of the highest ridership for rapidKL buses, rapidBus has introduced another initiative to ease congestion for commuters travelling on the Ampang area. Being a replacement for the early morning BET7 express bus, rapidBus has introduced a new limited stop, express DS01 trial service on 16 May 2022, plying between Ampang LRT station and KLCC during rush hours.

Rated at RM1.90 per journey with an hour frequency, the DS01 bypassed the packed Jalan Ampang, using the AKLEH highway, similar to BET7 service. However unlike the BET7, the DS01 does not start at Sri Nilam and ends at Munshi Abdullah, which shorter than BET7. There is not much difference between BET7 and DS01 service as both were also using AKLEH, however the DS01 also provides evening service which starts opposite to the Ampang bound, unlike the BET7 which only operates in the early morning only.

A little green update...

//This month marks the 6th month since SKSBUS took over the goKL free bus service, and the electric buses fleets are now increasing with service improvements. Here's a little update of the goKL service:-

-About 28 electric buses has been deployed in service today, marks around 47% progress to fully implement the electric bus service.

-7 routes have their electric buses introduced, with 4 routes have fully deployed their electric bus, while 3 routes were still in stages and 4 routes still using diesel bus.

-The real production unit, fleet 001 has been revealed at Parrot Green Line, with the plate number being on the latest, probably due to the fact that the bus were still in test before deployed in service.

-The frequency of the feeder routes has been increased, with rush hour frequency on feeder routes has been increased to 8 minutes per bus and 15 minutes on non-rush hours, similiar to the trunk routes frequencies.

The next green...

//The introduction of goKL electric bus initiative has led rapidKL to do the same to their services, as 3 BYD K9's transferred from BRT Sunway were brought into pilot testing on normal trunk routes. Previously deployed on SmartSelangor, PJ Free Bus and PKNS free bus, the K9 pilot test has started on 19 March 2022, deployed on route 650 and 400, with maximum speed expecting to reach 80km/h than slower 40km/h BRT limit.

It is expecting that the electric bus will undergo a 3 month pilot test, a standard pilot test by rapidKL, however details has not been yet posted by rapidKL about the operation hours and number of trips, as the operation proved to be unreliable due to the fact that the drivers are less trained for electric buses rather than SKS drivers which are trained to drive efficently.

Another reason the rapidKL electric bus being unreliable is due to the Cheras Selatan depot being located 20 kilometres away from Pasar Seni hub, rather than SKS Sentul depot which located less than 10 kilometres away from Pekeliling terminals, which consumes much energy when heading from depot to terminal or vice versa.

Low-ridership solutions...

//As routes were narrower due to cars parking along the route at residential areas and the feeder ridership are getting low due to lost connection because of narrower routes, rapidKL has launched an initiative to provide better connection, by implementing a 'Ride On Demand' van. The Toyota HiAce, which has a capacity of 10 passengers, has been previously on Van Perantara pilot test on route T252 from LRT Wangsa Maju to Ayer Panas via Desa Rejang on 16th November 2020 till 31st March 2021, before deploy on another 'Ride On Demand' test on route T785 from LRT Taman Paramount to Kampung Baiduri from 1st January 2022 till 31st March 2022.

However, the project were seem to be having unfavorable response, as rapidKL just posted about the new project on 7th March 2022, 2 months 7 days after the pilot launch, making the public to be unaware about this van and unable to get any review about this project.

Ladies only...

//After the full introduction of the SKS LEC-300EV on both Red and Blue Line on mid-February 2022, Kuala Lumpur City Hall introduced another initiative to encourage people to ride goKL buses by implementing a ladies only buses, in conjunction of the International Women's Day on 8 March 2022. The ladies only bus, which similiar to the KTM Komuter ladies coach, are being tested until 31 March 2022 to avoid sexual harassment on the fully loaded normal buses during rush hours.

Previously being implemented on rapidKL in early December 2010, the ladies bus were introduced on all last-mile routes and Pink Line, with the buses runs every 15 minutes on rush hour times, and a pink signboard written as 'Ladies Coach' is displayed for easier recognition, in addition to the driver's attention to the special services.

Alternate skyway...

//Genting Skyway is one of main transportation to the top of Genting Highlands, which opened and launched on 21st February 1997 by fourth prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Designed and built by Leitner Ropeways, the Genting Skyway is Southeast Asia's longest monocable gondola lift, spanning through 3.38 kilometres in length, starting from the lower terminal at Gothong Jaya, located approximately 51 kilometres north from Kuala Lumpur, climbing through deep dense jungle with 1800m elevation, directly to the top terminal at Genting Grand Hotel (formerly Maxims Hotel).

With the maximum of 8 passengers per gondola and a speed of 6 metres per second, the Genting Skyway can carry up to 2400 passengers per hour, thus making it as Southeast Asia's fastest gondola lift, and has carried more than 50 million passengers on it's first ten years of operations. However in 2016, when the Awana Skyway has been renowed and refurbished, the Genting Skyway were put on hold to reduce maintenance cost, and serving as an alternate route when Awana Skyway closed for maintenance.
