Sunday church time, lengthy post alert. I did a bit of research on this beautiful church near Centro of Guadalajara.
Parroquia El Sagrario Metropolitano, Guadalajara 🇲🇽⛪
The Parroquia El Sagrario Metropolitano is the oldest established parish community in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, founded on February 14, 1542 — the same day Guadalajara itself was founded.
Although its baptismal and marriage records date back to 1599, the beautiful neoclassical church we see today was constructed between 1808 and 1843.
Before the magnificent Guadalajara Cathedral was built, this site was already an important spiritual centre of the city. In 1782, Bishop Fray Antonio Alcalde y Barriga helped establish a separate parish district and provided funds for a dedicated temple.
The church was designed by architect José Gutiérrez and is considered one of Guadalajara's most important neoclassical buildings. Its façade features a beautiful Doric portico topped by three stone figures representing the theological virtues — Faith, Hope and Charity.
Inside, the architecture is elegant and restrained, reflecting the neoclassical style rather than the elaborate decoration of the earlier Baroque period. The main altar combines white marble and local yellow sandstone, with a golden monstrance beneath the central baldachin.
One of the most distinctive features is the oval dome. The original dome suffered serious damage from earthquakes in 1847, 1875 and 1900 and was eventually rebuilt by Antonio Arróniz Topete, giving the church the unusual shape it has today.
Construction began under Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo and was completed in 1843.
