In these captures I tried to create interesting compositions where the subjects align and blend with geometric shapes within the city.

You can see in the first image how there is a triad of subjects, each one of them has their own story, and framed within the lines. And creating contrast with each context.

In the second one, the grid formed by the light and columns create small sub frames and I tried to position different subjects there. And then using the tree branch as a leading line towards one of the subjects.

And finally on the third one I tried to frame people creating subframes within the whole composition. And creating contrast with scale and direction.

What do you think? Which one is your favorite?

This is Parque El Retiro in Madrid, Spain.

Captured in 2017, during a 3 month visit to the city I lived in for 3 years 2006-2009. This city has a special place in my heart.

Argyle Lunar New Year Celebration 2026 in Chicago.

First time photographing this parade in Uptown, and I decided to approach it differently. Most of my personal work lives in wide frames or a 50mm, close to the scene, building layers. This time I brought a telephoto.

I’ve used long lenses many times before, but mostly for commercial assignments. Using it for my personal street work felt like switching languages.

What I don’t love about longer lenses? For me they can flatten a scene. They compress space so much that sometimes the image loses that depth I usually chase.

What I do love? That same compression can add context in a powerful way. It stacks the background, keeps the environment present, and with the right aperture, separates the subject beautifully. The depth of field becomes a storytelling tool instead of just an effect.

All photographed in black and white, focusing on gesture, light, and the small human moments inside a public celebration.

Stepping outside my usual way of seeing always teaches me something. Curious what you feel when you look at these frames.

London 2017.

It is so satisfying going back in your old files and find hidden gems.

Photographers, go back to your old photos and see your progress. You’ll enjoy it!

And if you print them, even better!

Usually I don’t crop my captures, maybe a small correction but always with the original ratio (2:3). Lately I’ve been printing 4:5 and I’m loving it, especially in portrait mode, I think it is less “aggressive”. 2:3 feels too stretched to me now.

What do you think? Do you always stick with the same ratio? Do you crop? Or do you let your photograph decide?
