On this expedition into Mexico City, one of the things my wife wanted to do was see the Ballet Folklórico de México. Seeing the word “Ballet” my toxic masculinity kicked in, and I said “no way.” (lol)

A few days later, I found out that our other friends were going to see it as part of the birthday weekend for my friend Gary. I relented, of course, because I’d do just about anything for my friends.

Boy, was I ever wrong about not wanting to go. This performance far exceeded my expectations with the dance and the Mariachi. It was an emotional experience for me, and no single factor was the cause. I enjoyed watching my wife enjoy her heritage in a way that I never had before. I watched in pride as one of the male dancers selected her to dance with him, and then was equally blown away when one of the female dancers chose me to dance.

The sound of the violins and trumpets in the Mariachi band vibrated into my very soul. And of course, the happenings in my own country deeply saddened me at the same time, knowing that I don’t think my country will ever enjoy the feeling of national pride again, the way the Mexican people do.

My hope is for all of my friends to experience Mexico the way I have. It is truly something.

A Zocalo is similar to a town square. There is almost always a big church or cathedral and something going on. The Zocalo in Mexico City was no exception.

The nopal, or cactus, is an important symbol in Mexico's culture. The day we went, there were over 200 nopals, each painted by a different artist or group of artists. These were some of my favorites, in no particular order.

I've included a link to a local story about this exhibit.
