Yes yes, you’ve seen the picture before. But, I have a good reason for posting it twice! This chameleon now has a name! Meet Nadzikambia evanescens. The Mt Inago Sylvan Chameleon. This brand new species to science is found only on one single mountain in the SEAMA Eco System. Having visited many of these places, I can confidently say that it’s home is one of the most impressive. Large, elongated, sharp peaks form a jagged row across the sky, giving passers by the impression that they are in actual fact looking at a giant dragon skull. Nestled in-between these peaks is a rainforest so unique that it harbors swathes of animals found nowhere else on earth. The chameleon’s scientific name, directly translated, means vanishing chameleon. This points to a very worrying reality. The forests are almost all gone. And with it, their unique biodiversity. But there is hope! Local authorities are interested in saving their natural heritage. If we all stand together to protect the SEAMA we don’t need to witness it disappearing before our very own eyes. Organizations like .mz are already hard at work in the area. Thank you to .conradie and Krystal Tolley for the new species description. Non-macro photos by

This is a huge personal milestone, but more importantly, it shines a spotlight on a place I hold close to my heart: the SEAMA Eco Region.

Stretching from Mozambique to Malawi, this biodiversity hotspot is home to vast Miombo woodlands and mystical cloud forests perched atop ancient Inselbergs. Each isolated mountain shelters species found nowhere else on Earth.

But this paradise is under threat. The SEAMA region is now listed as one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. You can help, by informing yourself about the region and telling a friend about it. We need everyone’s help and the more people that know the better! šŸ’ššŸŒšŸø

Here’s a sneak-peak at a new project I’ll be working on with for the next few years. We’re really excited at the possibilities these white-background images hold! The aim is to completely document all of Southern Africa’s reptiles in this manner in order to create better educational resources that make accurate identification of reptiles easier and more accessible. Many exciting adventures await! This selection of photos was taken in collaboration with the .

Story time. I will always remember finding this particular chameleon. We were nearing the end of our expedition to the SEAMA ecoregion of Mozambique. We were running on fumes, two months of little sleep and fatigue from extreme physical exertion were taking their toll. A storm was brewing but we had to push on. We were gathering valuable population data on the Mt. Mabu Pigmy Chameleons, a species found no where else in the world. We were struggling, at this particular elevation we were finding no chameleons. It was both intriguing and frustrating as elsewhere we had found them by the dozens. The site was next to one of the few exposed boulders in the centre of the forest. Just the night before we had listened as Seferino, one of the guides, told us stories about this sacred rock. Were the spirits against us? As if answering us, out of no where, right on the edge of our last plot my headlight illuminated the unmistakeable silhouette of a sleeping Pigmy Chameleon. But this chameleon was unlike any other. It was ancient looking, much larger than any of the others, and it’s unusually pronounced features just added to this narrative. He moved slowly and cautiously and seemed to be aware of everything around him. He was the guardian of this little patch of forest. It was his. I felt honored to be able to photograph him. After taking his portrait I thanked him silently and wished him a good night before retiring to my damp tent a few meters away.

Exploring far away places would not be possible without support from a diverse group of adventurous individuals. During our adventures in Mozambique we were very fortunate to meet many such people and we always had good company on our trips!

It’s always exciting to discover an undescribed species… or two. Mozambique’s SEAMA ecosystem still holds many secrets, we have just scratched the surface. Unfortunately it is already one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. The Inselbergs feel like home to me. It would break my heart to see them lost forever. If there’s one thing I want to do in life it’s to help save these unique places. Photo by adventuruben
