Making Coir rope (Dhivehi: ރޯނުވެށުން) is regarded as one of the most important traditional handicraft in Maldives.
In good old days coir rope was in high demand and were exported to foreign countries. Also, our forefathers used it for building shelters and gadgets.
HDh.Kulhudhuffushi is a well known and specialized island for making coir rope.
The picture shows a woman beating coconut husk which is one step from the long process of this hard work.
Nowadays coir rope is mainly used for decorations and production of souvenirs.
