Jëre-jëf (Thank You)

Jëre-jëf is dedicated to all that see it through life’s challenges with grit, Love and Grace.
The teenager in the art piece is a gentle reminder to self (and you) to keep your sense of wander and contentment alive.
Inspired by the Virtual University of Senegal’s “Université Virtuelle du Sénégal (UVS)” slogan in Wolof, "foo nekk foffu la" which literally means "where you are, is where it happens". This is significant in that UVS aims to embed education within local communities, emphasizing that students are local agents for change within the societies where they live. UVS takes education to people where they live, making it possible for youth, women with young babies and people with disabilities to study at their choice of location and at their preferred pace.
In collaboration with 1mAcollective, NFTDKR and Genesis Africa for FORGING THE FUTURE, as part of the OFF program of the Dakar Bienalle 2022

Black Diamond

A collaborative concept CGI project that I recently did with the talented digital craftsman . This was the first among many other projects that we have and are working on; as a skill up in our creative disciplines.

Process of creating it is saved under my highlights.

I shall share the video version of it soon

When the Law Society of Kenya and Law Society of Kenya - Nairobi Branch choose not to uphold the same laws that they are meant to protect.

On new year's - 2018, I created a piece of art (Fire in the Sky-Nairobi 2018) that was later registered under the Kenya Copyright Board as is required in matters to protection of creative and intellectual work under the laws of Kenya.

However, in April 2018, LSK (Law Society of Kenya) unashamedly and unlawfully copied and altered my work without my consent, to promote their annual legal awards . A paid event
Through the many social shares, they had a successful event at the intercontinental hotel... all glammed up in suit and ties.

It is undisputed that LSK used my work in promoting their event. In this regard, I made my claims that both my economic and moral rights under the copyright law of Kenya were violated in regards to my work.

Owning up by the society and its leaders would have been an important step in demonstrating respect for intellectual property (IP) rights and the rule of law in general.
Unfortunately, the same bar (LSK) that is meant to uphold and protect the law, are violating it.To this date, there is no response from them. Silent treatment over amicable resolve.

Ironically, the society has committees on both the national and branch levels that deal with IP matters - not to mention the long list of advocates who practice and have specialized in IP law within its membership of over 13,000 members.

To be continued

“The noblest art is making others happy” - P.T. Barnum

Shela Hat Festival is an art competition organized once every two years in Shela, Lamu County. It brings together people from Lamu and Shela who come to express their creativity through hat making. The festival was pioneered by Roland Klemp and Herbert Menza as a way of promoting culture among the Lamu people.

We travelled to Shela, Lamu County, as a consort of four creatives, to experience this festival and also take and give give back printed portraits to competitors with their hats.

For a different and unique look, we crafted a mini-studio with two professional lights and a dark-green backdrop. We gelled the rim light Red to separate the subject from the background and also for much needed drama and depth. The key light captured the raw expressions of our subjects as complimented by their respective hats.

On location, we tethered our camera to a computer and a small printer that allowed us to quickly process and print images of each contestants, and handed back to them as prints for their keeps.
Their happiness on receiving was indescribable, and that is what we treasured most :)

Later in post-production, we added frames around the photos using Lamu Doors-inspired motifs designed by one of our creatives.

We hope you enjoy the result. By the way, the winning hat was a beautifully made butterfly whose colors really popped out.
