Flower Princess

On the picturesque banks of the Ramganga in the breathtaking Dhikala zone of Jim Corbett National Park, India, surrounded by smooth white stones shaped by the waters that once rushed over them, sat the most beautiful tigress I have ever seen.

I do have "unobstructed" shots of this pretty girl, but I chose to share this image with you first, captured through the dainty wildflowers. I hope you like it as much as I do!

Nature's top endurance athlete!

Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica)

A bird that broke a world record by flying continuously for 11 days!

The Bar-tailed Godwit holds the record for the longest nonstop flight in the world. One Bar-tailed Godwit flew from Alaska to Tasmania, covering a whopping 13,560 km (more than 8,400 miles) in 11 days without stopping! During this entire journey, it did not stop to eat, drink water, or rest. It crossed the entire Pacific Ocean nonstop!

How does the Bar-tailed Godwit do this?

These birds have specially adapted bodies:
• Before migration, to store maximum fat reserves and reduce body weight, they actually digest/shrink their internal organs (especially the digestive system)!
• They accumulate a large amount of body fat, which serves as fuel for the journey. By the end of the flight, they can weigh less than half of their original body weight.
• While flying, scientists believe they shut down one half of their brain at a time and take micro-naps for a few seconds!
• When they reach the destination, they can grow everything back as they eat!
Amazing, isn’t it?

It’s difficult for us even to fly even an aircraft for such a distance without stopping…But this bird crossed half the world and wrote a new record in history!

I took this picture near Adam’s Bridge in Taleimannar. There was only one bird present. When this rare winter visitor briefly looked my way, I felt a great sense of privilege.

Wetlands are not wastelands—let’s do all we can to protect their habitats!!

Bar-tailed Godwit.

Bar-tailed Godwit.

Ritta's Perfect Landing - nature's amazing biomechanics in action.

Eyes fixed in focus and tail acting as a perfect counterbalance, Ritta launched from a high branch, absorbing the impact effortlessly on his front legs and landing with flawless precision.

Fun fact: Leopards can land safely from heights several times their own body length because their flexible spine, powerful forelimbs, and shock-absorbing joints work together like a natural suspension system, helping them stay silent, stable, and ready to move in an instant. Most cats are good at landing but Leopards are specialists adapted for both climbing (often with heavy loads) and controlled, fearless descents.

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS, RITTA

Lying on a branch high up in the tree, the heartthrob of Kumana seems lost in thought.

Maybe it’s a bit of “me time,” a brief pause between rounds of wooing his girlfriend.

SUNSET SILHOUETTES

The fiery sun was about to melt slowly into the Indian Ocean,
Seabirds drifted past,
their wings carving fleeting silhouettes in the light.

Then I saw the boat…
and waited—
until it aligned perfectly beneath the blazing sun.

Later, at home, I zoomed in—
and found myself drawn into something deeper.

As mesmerising as the fiery red sun was,
it was the silhouettes within the boat that held me…

A man, standing with a fishing rod.
A figure that looks like a woman, possibly wearing a hat.
A smaller figure ...a child?
and another…

A family?
Or just a story my mind is trying to tell?

If they are,
what are they doing out there—
in the middle of the ocean,
with darkness slowly closing in?

And I wonder…
how does this same sunset look to them?

SUN-KISSED

I love lifting my face to the soft morning sun to feel the gentle warmth of its rays on my skin. I couldn't help but wonder if this flamingo was feeling the same :)

Flamingos are mostly winter visitors to our island. A richer pink beak usually suggests a well-fed, healthy adult.

"OLU BABA"

KLM38 OB
Kumana National Park
28.02.2026

We were pleasantly surprised to suddenly find this handsome fella seated calmly under a tree on the Bagura off road, just by the roadside. He wasn't bothered by us at all, until another loud jeep approached, and he just quietly stood up and left.

As the "Kumana Leopards" database https://www.kumanaleopards.com/ explains, "he is the only surviving cub from KLF29 Olu’s 2023 litter, as his sibling went missing at a very young age. Confident and not shy, he is well habituated to safari vehicles. His initial sightings were recorded around Godagedipokuna, but as he grew older, he began exploring new areas and now roams around Bagura as well. The name ‘OB’ stands for ‘Olu’s Baby’. When he was a cub, safari operators and guides affectionately referred to him as “Olu Baba”, and the name ‘OB’ was adopted as a simple way to reflect that nickname".

Thank you Kumana Safari Nishala for your excellent guiding!
