Black Kite (Milvus migrans)

The Black Kite is a medium-sized bird of prey, easily recognized by its slender build, long wings, and slightly forked tail. This adaptable raptor is known for its effortless soaring, often circling high on thermals while scanning the ground for food.

Ornithological Details:
• Scientific name: Milvus migrans
• Family: Accipitridae
• Status in Sri Lanka: Winter migrant
• Habitat: Open country, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural areas, and near human settlements
• Diet: Opportunistic feeder — small mammals, reptiles, insects, fish, carrion, and human refuse
• Identification features:
• Brown body with paler streaked head and breast
• Yellow cere and legs
• Long wings with darker flight feathers
• Shallow forked tail, visible in flight

Black Kites are highly intelligent and adaptable, often seen gliding gracefully with minimal wingbeats. Their presence is an important indicator of healthy open ecosystems, where they play a key role as natural scavengers and predators.

Through My Lens – A Fascinating Wildlife Fact

The Sri Lankan elephant’s trunk is one of nature’s greatest tools — built with over 40,000 muscles, it works as a hand, a nose, a snorkel, and even a gentle communicator. In a single sweep, it can pull down branches, pick tiny leaves, or sense scents from far across the forest.

Captured at Yala, this giant was using that incredible trunk to carefully select the freshest greens — a perfect display of power and precision working in harmony.

The snake in the image is a Sri Lankan green pit viper (Craspedocephalus trigonocephalus),

Also known by its Sinhala name, "Pala Polonga".
Characteristics: This is a moderately venomous pit viper species endemic to Sri Lanka. It is known for its effective camouflage, with a bright green body and yellow or black markings.

Habitat: It is an arboreal (tree-dwelling) and nocturnal snake, but it may be seen on low shrubs during the day. It is found in all three climatic zones of Sri Lanka, except for high-altitude areas and arid zones.

Venom: Its venom can cause extensive local swelling and pain, and while systemic envenoming is rare, medical assistance is recommended for a bite.

The dusky striped squirrel (Funambulus obscurus)

Is a species of small squirrel from Sri Lanka that is largely confined to rainforests in the southwestern "wet zone" with higher rainfall than the rest of the island. It was formerly regarded as a subspecies of Funambulus sublineatus from India, at which point the English name of the "combined species" also was dusky striped squirrel.
Only found in Sri Lanka, this squirrel can be seen in wet zone low elevations to highlands with dense forest cover up to ~2400m or 8000 ft, being a squirrel that naturally occurs at the highest elevations where frost can occur compared to other Sri Lankan squirrels. Sinharaja rain forest, Horton Plains, and districts like Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and parts of Kandy are home to this squirrel.

The Sri Lanka grey hornbill (Ocyceros gingalensis)

Is a bird in the hornbill family and a widespread and common endemic resident breeder in Sri Lanka. Hornbills are a family of tropical near-passerine birds found in the Old World.
The Sri Lanka grey hornbill is a gregarious bird found in forest habitats.
The female lays up to four white eggs in a tree hole blocked off during incubation with a cement made of mud, droppings and fruit pulp. There is only one narrow aperture, barely wide enough for the male to transfer food to the mother and chicks. These birds usually live in pairs or small flocks consisting up to five birds (2 adults and 2-3 juveniles).

They are omnivores observed consuming berries, fruits, insects and small lizards. It feeds mostly on figs, although occasionally it eats small rodents, reptiles and insects.

The spot-winged thrush, (Geokichla spiloptera)

“පුල්ලි වල් අවිච්චියා" "Pulli Wal Awichchiya”

Is an Asian thrush, a group within the large thrush family Turdidae. It is an endemic resident breeder in Sri Lanka.

This uncommon species breeds in hill rainforests, and to a lesser extent in drier woodlands, at altitudes between 500 and 2000 m. The wintering areas are similar but include less well-wooded areas, and are generally at 750 to 1500 m altitude. The spot-winged thrush is generally solitary and can be quite secretive, especially in the dense undergrowth and bamboo clumps it favours.
The loose cup nests are lined with vegetation and placed in a tree fork. 2-3 buff or bluish-green eggs are laid. This species raises two broods each year.
Spot-winged thrushes are omnivorous, but eat far more insects than fruit. They feed on the ground.

Adults of this medium-sized thrush, which measures 21 to 27 cm (8.3 to 10.6 in) in total length and weighs 70 g (2.5 oz) are light brown above with a double wing bar of white spots. The pale face has two dark bars. The underparts are white with heavy spotting. The bill is black and legs are yellow. The song is a rich and varied whistling. Young birds have buff streaking on the upperparts, and the face and the underparts are light brown with heavy streaking.(wiki)
