SPOTTED DOVE – අළු කොබෙයියා

Spilopelia chinensis, also known as the eastern spotted dove, is a small, long-tailed pigeon and a common resident breeding bird.

SIZE
• Small to medium-sized dove
• Slender body with a relatively long tail

IDENTIFICATION
• Rosy buff underparts fading to grey on head and belly
• Distinctive black half-collar on the back and sides of the neck
• Collar feathers tipped with white spots
• Dark brown wings with grey-edged feathers
• White center of abdomen and vent
• Outer tail feathers tipped white, visible during take-off

HABITAT & ROOSTING
• Found in open woodlands, gardens, farmlands, and urban areas
• Common near human settlements
• Perches on trees, wires, and buildings

BEHAVIOR & ECOLOGY
• Usually seen in pairs or small groups
• Gentle, fast flight with visible white tail tips
• Often forages on the ground for seeds

BREEDING
• Nests in low vegetation or shrubs
• Builds a flimsy cup-shaped nest of twigs
• Occasionally nests on the ground or on buildings
• Lays two whitish eggs

DIET (General for species)
• Mainly granivorous
• Feeds on seeds, grains, and small plant material
