Minneriya Wewa – A Living Legacy of Ancient Sri Lanka
Minneriya Wewa is not simply a reservoir; it is a remarkable symbol of the advanced engineering, wisdom, and vision of ancient Sri Lanka.
Built during the reign of King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD, Minneriya Tank was one of the great irrigation achievements of the ancient Anuradhapura Kingdom. Historical sources identify it with the ancient Manihira reservoir, one of the major tanks attributed to King Mahasena.

For more than 1,700 years, this ancient reservoir has played an important role in sustaining agriculture, wildlife, and communities in Sri Lanka's dry zone. Its creation reflects the extraordinary understanding ancient Sri Lankan engineers had of water management and irrigation.
Today, the changing water level of Minneriya Wewa reveals a very different landscape. The exposed land reminds us that beneath this vast reservoir lies a remarkable chapter of Sri Lanka's ancient hydraulic civilization.
Minneriya is also internationally famous for its wildlife. As the water level recedes during the dry season, large numbers of wild Asian elephants gather around the reservoir in one of Sri Lanka's most spectacular natural events, known as “The Gathering.”
