In 2023, I had the opportunity to participate in the MALAO Photo Trip, organized by MALAO Studios . We traveled to the northern reaches of Luang Prabang, marking the first time the project journeyed by boat. Along the way, we witnessed the breathtaking natural beauty of the Mekong River’s banks and interviewed local villagers about their way of life.

​For these communities, the river is the primary artery for travel between villages and towns—essential for trade, business, and even commuting to school. In these rural areas, boat handling is not a skill reserved only for men; women and children also navigate the waters with remarkable expertise. Having been shaped and nurtured by nature since childhood, every location along the Mekong holds deep-seated memories for the people, passing from the ancestors down to the new generation.

​However, everything is now in a state of transition. As modern development expands, certain cultural traditions and cherished memories are gradually fading away with the passage of time.

For a child of the countryside, the world is painted in the vibrant greens of the forest and the deep blues of the sky. Their toys are not bought.
​While city children might be watching cartoons, this child is chasing butterflies through the rice paddies. Happiness isn't measured by the price of a toy, but by the dirt on their hands and the laughter that echoes at sunset.
​Yet, the most captivating thing is their eyes. Sharp and profound, they reflect a blend of pure innocence, resilience, and a silent story of life in harmony with nature. In those eyes lies a mystery, inviting anyone to look closer and discover the true joy of living simply.
