As South Korea prepares for its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at 11 a.m. Friday (KST), Seoul city officials are urging football fans to use public transportation and take precautions against the summer heat as large-scale public viewing events make their return.
Thousands of supporters are expected to gather at Gwanghwamun Square to cheer on the national team in its Group A opener against Czechia. Additional street cheering events are planned for South Korea’s matches against Mexico on June 19 and South Africa on June 25.
Authorities have warned that Friday’s match coincides with peak morning commuting hours, which could lead to heavy congestion around Gwanghwamun Square, Sejong-daero, Jongno, and nearby subway stations and bus stops.
The public viewing event is being jointly organized by the Korea Football Association, KT, and the Red Devils supporters’ club. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, organizers will deploy safety personnel, emergency medical teams, and heat-response measures throughout the venue.
The stage is set for another unforgettable World Cup atmosphere as fans unite to support the Taegeuk Warriors on football’s biggest stage.
