Making a million look like a masterpiece. ✨🦎

From banknotes to basket-weaving. These are actually Venezuelan money—due to hyperinflation, they’ve found a second life as art here in Bogota. The most expensive (but cheapest) art I’ve seen in Colombia. 💸🇨🇴

One of Ecuador’s most celebrated mask festivals, Diablada de Píllaro (Devil Dance of Píllaro), is part of the New Year celebrations, turning the Andean town of Píllaro into a moving theatre of masks, music, and dance.
Among its many characters, veiled couples move in coordinated steps—faces erased behind mesh masks, holding the tempo as the procession advances.

New Year’s Eve in Ecuador is marked by the tradition of Año Viejo.
In Otavalo, people dressed as widows (viudas) — in provocative outfits and colorful wigs — block the streets, teasing passing cars and collecting coins.
At midnight, a straw effigy known as a monigote is burned to send off the old year, as fireworks light up the sky to welcome the new one.

December 28th is an Andean April Fools’ Day — Día de los Santos Inocentes.

Held at the end of the year, Bando-Bando in Atuntaqui is not a spectacle but a communal ritual marking the closure of time. Through masks, satire, and mockery, social order is briefly suspended, allowing truths to be spoken without consequence. On December 28, deception is permitted, laughter is shared, and the passing year is released through performance.

The flooded city, the mirror of Venice. ✨
This is , where high tide and strong winds cause low-lying areas to flood. The iconic San Marco Basilica is reflected in the water covering St. Mark's Square, one of the first areas to be completely submerged.
