One of my favorite interviews by Barack Obama is one where he said, and I quote, “Do not let people think you don’t belong.”
I absolutely love Barack Obama not just because he made history, but because he did what many believed was unachievable.
He became the first Black president of one of the most powerful nations on earth. His story is one of sheer determination, resilience, and the courage to attempt the impossible even when the odds were stacked against him.
That is why when I watched that interview, I knew he was speaking from experience. He was talking about himself.
But it also got me thinking. How many times in life have we been made to feel like we don’t belong, that we are not good enough, smart enough, or attractive enough, that certain spaces, opportunities, or dreams are reserved for other people and not us?
Here is an uncomfortable truth about gatekeepers. They often see your potential long before you do. They just hope you never realize it.
When people tell you that you don’t belong, it usually says far more about their fear than your ability. Your presence disrupts a narrative they are invested in. You challenge an order that benefits them, and instead of rising to meet the moment, they try to shrink you to fit their comfort. It is always easier to exclude than to evolve.
But here is the truth. You do not need anyone’s permission to have a seat at the table. You, just like everyone else, have the right to take up space regardless of your background.
Yes, some people are handed opportunities on a silver platter while others have to work twice as hard, but that reality does not change one fundamental fact. You belong anywhere you choose to stand.
You are, after all, a child of the universe, and you have every right to be here.
So stand your ground. Take up space without apology. Let your work speak when your presence is questioned, and if a door is deliberately shut in your face, have the courage and the audacity to build your own.
Do not let people tell you don’t belong, and stop asking for permission to exist in spaces you have already earned.
