Anybody that knows me can testify that I ❤️ retro and especially retro Japan. The more Showa era the better… the music, the aesthetic and the overall vibes harkens back to a simpler and more innocent time. And if there was one era I wish I could travel back in time to see with my own eyes it would have to be 70’s and 80’s Japan.
Imagine my excitement when I heard that there was a retro museum in Odaiba that could give you the next best thing and take you back there through some extremely life like installations AND that you could take photos there!

I’m happy to have gone with who was just as excited for the old time vibes as I was.

I was also trying out the new iT32 Flash which I strapped on to my Fujifilm x100vi and with a little editing I think I was able to get that filmic retro look.

AURA (Ultra Slowed + Reverb)

Lighting WILL make or break your shoot, and we, as photographers, are lucky to live in a time where gear is getting more innovative at a faster rate than ever. And nowhere do I notice that more than in lighting gear.

Recently, sent me their new ML80Bi LED Video Light to try out, and after weeks of field testing, I can confidently say that I ❤️ this light.

No cables and runs on a single ML-BA battery with up to 60 minutes of full power output that attaches directly to the unit. It is so small and compact and easy to use because the wide assortment of attachments can be used magnetically!

For this shoot, I used the ML-Z zoom lens reflector, which comes with the kit. It boosts the output by about 10x, so this 80w was more like a 100w light (29,600 Lux @ 1m with the reflector). You can see for yourself in the BTS video just how much output comes out.

I’ll be making a separate video showcasing the really handy projector mount and foldable Fresnel, so stay tuned for that.

先日、から新製品の ML80Bi LED ビデオライトを試用する機会をいただきました。数週間にわたる実地テストを経て、私は自信を持って言えます。このライトが大好きです。

ケーブルが不要で、本体に直接装着する単一のML-BAバッテリー1本で最大60分間のフルパワー出力が可能です。非常に小型でコンパクト、しかも多彩なアタッチメントが磁力で装着できるため、使いやすさも抜群です！

今回の撮影では、キットに同梱されているML-Zズームレンズリフレクターを使用しました。これにより光量が約10倍に増幅されるため、この80Wライトは実質100W相当の明るさとなりました（リフレクター使用時、1m先で29,600ルクス）。どれほどの光量が出るかは、BTS動画でご自身の目でお確かめください。

非常に便利なプロジェクターマウントと折りたたみ式フレネルレンズを紹介する動画を別途制作する予定ですので、ぜひご期待ください。

I just want my photos to spark a little bit of imagination in the viewer.

That’s really all.

Sounds cliché maybe but at the end of the day I’m not interested in taking just a pretty photo. I live in Tokyo and the city does 90% of that work for us all. When I host workshops I always say that you can hold up your phone camera randomly and take a ‘pretty’ photo of the city (yeah, Tokyo is THAT photogenic at night).

But my motivation in doing this for the past several years has been primarily to tell stories through my photography. To bring the viewer into a world and a place maybe they don’t know a lot about.

I don’t know where my photography is heading (or evolving I should say) but I think as long as you keep reminding yourself of your core principles or motivations, than anywhere, any style will be true to you and have your signature all over it.

I love putting together sets like this. Living in Tokyo the challenge is transforming tiny spaces into your vision but getting creative by using lighting, props and angles it’s definitely possible.
