You didn’t come to Tokyo for boring photos, did you? 
I’ve been working full-time as a professional photographer in Tokyo for the past several years, and one of my favorite parts of the job is meeting so many of you from around the world. Solo travelers, couples, families, artists, brands... you name it, I’ve probably shot it. 
 
Flash in the City is for those who want something a little different. 
 
Think direct flash, movement, grain, crowded streets, convenience stores, late-night Tokyo and all the little moments in between. Less posing in front of landmarks and more making images that feel spontaneous, stylish and a little raw. 
We’ll wander, experiment and use the city as our backdrop — creating photos that feel somewhere between a night out in Tokyo and an editorial shoot.

Away from the noise and lights below. Just some room to breathe and create. 
 
I love me a good rooftop, but I haven’t found myself adventuring as much as I used to — and Tokyo has definitely become a bit more stringent about it. 
 
Still, finding these little nooks up top is as much of a reward as the photos themselves.

Lately I haven’t had as many chances to head out strictly for street photography, but I’ve been doing more workshops, which has thankfully kept me out shooting and staying sharp.

Sometimes plans don’t go as you had, well, planned.  
 
We wanted to check out a specific building with a very unique, artistic flair in a part of Tokyo I don’t get out to.... let’s say ever. The building ended up having a very grumpy owner so that lasted all of 5 minutes and we were left wandering this fairly sleepy part of town motivated to make something. We did end up stumbling into a fairly typical Tokyo alley with vending machines but it also had a very randomly placed photobooth. With a little lighting magic (brought my portable amaran Ray 60c and battery and my Ace 25c) we were able salvage the first part of the evenings shoot with a real cinematic late-night Tokyo feel. The red/cyan lighting, the photobooth, and the floral shirt 🤌🏼

“You are [Not] Alone” 
 
⁡ Working off a title inspired from Evangelion to come up with this concept of peering malevolent eyes always with us 👁️…..however you want to apply that symbolism is up to you.
