This tiny castle has been through a LOT. 🇨🇾
Sitting quietly at the edge of Paphos Harbor is a fortress that has spent centuries being rebuilt, destroyed, repurposed and rebuilt again.
The site began as a Byzantine fort protecting the harbor. The Lusignans rebuilt it in the 13th century, the Venetians later dismantled it, and the Ottomans restored the surviving fortress in 1592. During Ottoman rule, parts of it were even used as prison cells.
Then the British arrived and found another use for it:
They turned it into a salt warehouse 😂😂
They continued using the castle to store salt until 1935, when it was declared an ancient monument.
Today you can walk around Paphos Harbor and barely realize how much history is sitting right in front of you.
