I've gone swimming in shark-infested waters (no cage), hiking up a volcano, been arms-length from orangutans, been surrounded by monkeys, and met some tremendous people across the world. Visit50 tells those stories with my photography.

Hong Kong is great for night photography - such fascinating architecture pairs well with light streaks from a time lapse, framed within the HK skyline.

What's your most embarrassing travel faiI? Want to hear mine? I'll start. I was ankle deep in mud in a jungle, when I realized I was in Asia just a couple of days before Chinese New Year. NYE is such a fun celebration, especially in cities, so I thought this could be a unique opportunity to experience this.

To celebrate my first Chinese New Year in Asia, I left the jungle and headed towards Kota Kinabalu, which everyone calls “KK”. It's the largest city in Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo.

Travel is wonderful if you're curious about the world and other cultures. Curiosity drives many of my travel, so I was interested to see how people celebrate... but I was in a jungle without WiFi or phone service.

A new travel friend (that I met on a wildlife swamp boat trip in the jungle) came with me, so we started the next chapter of our adventure. We took a bus to another bus to a ferry to another bus and was so excited to make it to KK.

But the city wasn't in party mode. No visible celebration. Nearly every restaurant and bar was closed. I was so confused. Maybe we got the dates wrong? Nope. We finally found a place with live music.

At the time, I had no idea that CNY is actually more of a family holiday, similar to the way Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. There were no big parties with the irrational excitement of elaborate countdowns signifying the exact moment of the new year like on December 31st.

All of this easily could have been avoided with a little research, but I didn't have access to the internet at any point during this idea and adventure.

This was all during a multi-month backpacking trip around the world, with many crazy stories. But we experience and we learn.

Happy Chinese New Year to all that celebrate!

What's your biggest Travel Fail?
