Heading to the Dolomites, it made the most sense to fly into Venice, spend a few days there, and then take the train to Bolzano. This was my 10th trip to Venice, and even then it's impossible not to take pictures from every bridge and through every passageway!

Have you been to Venice? Do you love it or hate it? I hated it my first visit, but now I love it. One of the world's iconic cities.

Earlier this month I traveled to Venice, the Dolomites and Florence with friends. I just wrote up a blog post on the Dolomites portion of the trip - with an amazing hotel, two spectacular hikes, a great e-bike ride, and fall colors. Highly recommended next time you head to Italy!

The Dolomites are amazing, but it can be intimidating to plan a trip. We headed to Eggental and stayed at Cyprianerhof and it was perfect!

WIN A TRIP TO KRABI!!

Have you been to Krabi? All of Thailand is amazing (I’ve been eight times!), but Krabi truly is spectacular. And now you can win a trip!

As part of the Your Green Stories Never End campaign, Tourism Thailand is giving away a trip to Krabi, including a two-night stay, flights, meals, transportation and activities. Note: I’d highly recommend staying a lot longer than two nights and island hopping! The contest is running now through September 25th, with winners announced on September 27th. It’s linked from the first comment.

These photos:

1 & 2: Separated Sea. At low tide walk between Chicken Island, Koh Mor and Koh Tub.
3-5: Chicken Island. Famous for its chicken-shaped limestone cliff, and a popular snorkeling spot.
6 & 7: Railay Beach. Amazing sunsets and rock climbing.
8 & 9: Bat Cave (at Railay Beach): Worth the sweaty hike for a stunning view.
10 & 11: Poda Island. Spectacular snorkeling from shore.

I've been quiet here! It's been a year with a lot of travel, but I've deliberately not documented a lot of it. Far more enjoyable to explore destinations when you're leaving the phone in the room and not taking notes to be able to write a blog post later.

Having said that, I wrote up a post on Syros after our July visit, simply because Syros is a great Greek island summer destination and it's not on most tourists' radar. Overtourism really comes down to too many people visiting the same place at the same time. If more people head to Syros and other smaller islands instead of Mykonos and Santorini, everyone benefits.

These are some of my favorite photos. I'll link to the blog post below.

My blog post on our visit to Uluru! Well worth a side trip from pretty much anywhere in Australia that you happen to be. For somewhere in the middle of nowhere, it's remarkably easy to reach!

Northern Territory – Australia

In two days and two nights at Uluru, we booked three experiences: Wintjiri Wiru; the Australian Native High Tea; and the Sounds of Silence dinner. We also got to visit the Field of Lights as a bonus. A rundown:

Wintjiri Wiru is a dinner experience overlooking Uluru that includes a telling of the ancestral Mala story using 1,100 drones. It’s the largest continually-operating drone show in the world. I really enjoyed the initial reception, the food (including kangaroo, crocodile and emu), the setting, the storytelling, and the pace of the evening.

The Australian Native High Tea is at Sails in the Desert and is a traditional high tea but with ingredients from the Outback. The teas and bellinis were excellent, and the food was interesting (and good)! We finished almost everything.

Sounds of Silence was recommended more than any other before our visit. It’s a dinner experience overlooking Uluru with a star talk by a night sky expert. The star talk was amazing, and the food was good, but at four hours it was a really long evening. Honestly, if I went back I’d probably only book one dinner experience, and I’d opt for Wintjiri Wiru over Sounds of Silence. But there’s also not a lot to do at night at Uluru, so if you don’t mind long evenings, book everything!

Then there’s the Field of Light. This is an art installation with 50,000 lights that’s been at Uluru since 2016. We got to walk through it between Sounds of Silence (at a temporary location now) and the buses. It’s pretty to see. I can’t speak to the Field of Light dinner or other experiences.

If you’ve experienced both Wintjiri Wiru and Sounds of Silence, would you do both again?

As custodians of the land, Anangu hold the Mala story from Kaltukatjara to Uluru. To share their story, RAMUS designed and produced an artistic platform using drones, light and sound to create an immersive storytelling experience.

Uluru, in Australia’s Northern Territory, has always been on my travel wish list – one of the world’s iconic destinations. Since we were going to be in Sydney for Christmas break, we added on two days at Uluru. If not now, when?

In two days and two nights, we did two dinner experiences (Wintjiri Wiru and Sounds of Silence), had the Australian Native High Tea, checked out the Gallery of Central Australia, and got the kids some left-side driving experience. But the absolute highlight was the 10km (6.2 mile) base walk. We arrived at Uluru right at sunrise (because it’s summer and the days heat up) and completed the walk in a little over two hours. What surprised us was how green it was. I always had this impression that Uluru was surrounded by flat, red desert, but the tall grasses everywhere were beautiful. There are even waterholes.

These are my favorite base walk photos. Have you done the base walk? What was your experience?

I was in Portland for a travel conference last week and didn't see a lot of the city or the area, but a few of us skipped the last morning of the conference to head to the Portland Japanese Garden. Absolutely beautiful! Highly recommended.
