Venice is a Sound - an analogue journey — documenting one of the most iconic cities in the world, In a world which demands instant everything i settle into the pace of Venice which invites slowness, presence, and deep observation through the process of film. The paradox of film has always been a fascination of mine. The decisive moment captured on celluloid, which is then slowly revealed through layers of time, much like the way Venice feels to me. Venice is a Sound is an ongoing record.

These images were taken on a road trip in italy I went on a few years ago with some friends. One friend was tracing his family roots, so went off together travelling through Tuscany and down into the south of Italy. We visited the house he’s buying, and inside, I found this old camera. He handed it to me — I loaded a roll of film and shot the rest of the trip with it.

It was a tiny, almost toy-like camera, and I had no idea what the results would be. But I’m really happy with some of these shots. It’s a reminder that it doesn’t really matter what camera you use — shooting film is always a pleasure for me.

Film captures more than just the image; you pick up a little bit of the energy, the atmosphere, and it becomes a memory you can feel.

Story is everything.

1/ The lady we met in the town where my friend’s grandfather had lived as a boy. She shared stories, gave us information, and cried when we left — this was our last moment before saying goodbye.
2/ An old man in a local bar who helped us track down people connected to my friend’s grandfather.
3/ Orange trees in Calabria.
4/ The library at the old convent, Badia a Coltibuono.
5/ Arezzo.
6/ An Airbnb somewhere along the journey.
7/ On the road, under the rain.
