BASILICA AND CLOUDS
Located close to the Galleria Umberto I, tha Basilica Mauriziana dates back to the late sixteenth century, when the Archconfraternity of the Holy Cross financed the restoration of a pre-existing Romanesque church of 1207, dedicated to St. Paul.
In 1678 the church was remodeled again by the architect Antonio Bettino, already a collaborator of the famous Guarino Guarini, and equipped with the large dome that surmounts the central nave. At the behest of King Vittorio Amedeo II, in 1728 the church was entirely ceded to the Mauritian Order and the Archconfraternity, which thus took the name of Royal Archconfraternity of Saints Maurice and Lazarus and the church then became the "Magistral Basilica of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus".
The following year, the urban transformation of the area also affected the façade which was redesigned by Filippo Juvarra. The current design of the main façade is the result of a subsequent intervention by Carlo Bernardo Mosca, dating back to 1836.
The photo was taken form the "Juvarra city block", which was designed by the same architect who redesigned the church's facade.
Looks gorgeous, doesn't it?
