BASILICA AND CLOUDS

Located close to the Galleria Umberto I, tha Basilica Mauriziana dates back to the late sixteenth century, when the Archconfraternity of the Holy Cross financed the restoration of a pre-existing Romanesque church of 1207, dedicated to St. Paul.

In 1678 the church was remodeled again by the architect Antonio Bettino, already a collaborator of the famous Guarino Guarini, and equipped with the large dome that surmounts the central nave. At the behest of King Vittorio Amedeo II, in 1728 the church was entirely ceded to the Mauritian Order and the Archconfraternity, which thus took the name of Royal Archconfraternity of Saints Maurice and Lazarus and the church then became the "Magistral Basilica of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus".

The following year, the urban transformation of the area also affected the façade which was redesigned by Filippo Juvarra. The current design of the main façade is the result of a subsequent intervention by Carlo Bernardo Mosca, dating back to 1836.

The photo was taken form the "Juvarra city block", which was designed by the same architect who redesigned the church's facade.

Looks gorgeous, doesn't it?

DIE NEUE RESIDENZ

This is the Rise Garden in the New Residence in Bamberg.
This great building is the former palace of the prince-bishops of Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Ciry in Bavaria.. It is located in the Domplatz, the Cathedral Square, and is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the city. Today it houses the Bamberg State Library (Staatsbibliothek Bamberg) and the State Gallery (Staatsgalerie Bamberg), and an important paintings Gallery.

These are memories of a wonderful few days with my great friend .ba_fotografie and her husband back in - alas 😜 - 2023.

🇮🇹 DIFFERENT PLACES AND TIMES - SAME FLAG 🇮🇹

2 GIUGNO 1946 - 2026

June 2 is an important holiday for Italians - it's when we went to the polls (all fo us - eg. eligible voters including, for the first time, women) and chose the REPUBLIC over the monarchy. A monarchy who was guilty of having given too much power to Mussolini and never tried to take it back.

These pics were taken over the years and in many different places (mostly in Turin, though). There's the one when my good friend danced on the Mole; the one taken in Rome with ; the other one taken on an instameet in Arenzano with IG friends from and ; the one when the flew over town... and so on.
In all of them there's il Tricolore - the Italian flag 🇮🇹.

Happy Republic's Day, IG's!!

THE LIGHT OF THE REAL BEFORE CARAVAGGIO

The exhibition “𝗟𝗮 𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮 𝗱𝗶 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗼: 𝗟𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼 𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼” at explores how Lorenzo Lotto and Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo anticipated many of the qualities that would later define Caravaggio’s art, including dramatic lighting, emotional intensity, and a striking sense of realism.

At the heart of the exhibition is Lotto’s "Holy Family with Saint Catherine of Alexandria" , an exceptional painting on loan from the in Bergamo, presented alongside two works by Savoldo. Through this dialogue between masterpieces of the early sixteenth century, visitors can discover how both artists developed a new, deeply human approach to sacred subjects, shaped by Northern European influences and careful observation of light and emotion.

The exhibition also pays tribute to the nineteenth-century art historian Giovan Battista Cavalcaselle, whose studies contributed to the rediscovery of Lotto and Savoldo, and features an imagined lesson by Roberto Longhi, who recognized both painters as important forerunners of Caravaggio.

Yesterday I was a guest of at the preas conference for the opening of the exhibition, which runs at the Galleria Sabauda, until 15 September 2026.

THE DAY MAY BREAK

My good friend and I are generally very good at finding a photography exhibition to go and watch, but this one beat them all!

The Day May Break by , launched in 2020, is a photographic project made up of around 60 works divided into four chapters. The series explores the human and environmental consequences of climate change, focusing especially on the devastating and unequal impact of the crisis on vulnerable communities and wildlife.

Torino presents all four chapters together. The exhibition combines harsh realities with poetic imagery, offering both a warning and a sense of hope.

The first chapter, based in Kenya and Zimbabwe, and the second, set in Bolivia, feature striking portraits of people and animals affected by droughts and floods that have destroyed homes, livelihoods, and habitats. The animals were photographed in sanctuaries and reserves after surviving environmental destruction and illegal wildlife trafficking. People and animals are portrayed side by side; with the exception of the puma, jaguar and bear, where a glass sheet was used, no protection was placed between the people and the animals, because the latter are used to human interaction and pose no threat.

The third chapter, SINK / RISE (2023), was produced in Fiji and presents underwater portraits symbolising the communities threatened by rising sea levels and the loss of land and identity caused by climate change.

The fourth chapter, The Echo of Our Voices (2024), takes place in the Jordanian desert and focuses on Syrian refugee families displaced by war and living in increasingly arid conditions worsened by climate change.

Through these images, the project reflects on resilience, human relationships, and survival in the face of ongoing hardship.

👑 ROYAL 👑

The Royal Palace of Turin stands out amid the other buildings in these pics taken from the Capucins Mount.

It was the historical residence od the house of Savoy - originally built in the 16th century and later modernized by Christine Marie of France (1606–1663) in the 17th century, with designs by the Baroque architect Filippo Juvarra. The spiked dome you see is that of the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, which was built to house the famous Shroud of Turin.

It is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list along with 13 other residences of the House of Savoy.
